The Adventures of G&T
2 May 09
Tim is fast asleep and nursing a nasty hangover. Me? Im swinging in a deliciously comfy hammock in one of the most beautiful places in the world - the Amazon rainforest. Overlooking the breathtaking river and greenery below me, mind you. It doesn't get much better than this (my famous last words, Im sure!).
We've moved to another lodge for one night, the Shangri-La. It is like one giant treehouse with different levels (the top level being full of hammocks) and quite spectacular. It is so peaceful here.
Last night was a rather large one, with the whole crew taking advantage of the cheap drinks at the lodge. Tim and Mike got rather excited with the blow-dart gun that Tim bought in a nearby village. In fact, all of us got pretty excited and soon we were all having a go! The downside to the fun was when Mike loaded the gun without telling Tim, who then decided to blow what he thought was just air, into Mike's eye… Let's just say Mike was very lucky - it just missed the eyeball and pierced the skin underneath! Of course, you couldn't get either of them to stop laughing about the whole thing, while us girls looked on in horror. Boys will be boys.
Anyway, as I said, we went to a nearby village yesterday and we were shown how to make the local drink, chicha. It is made from fermented yuka, which is a cross between a sweet potato and normal potato, but much more starchy. I quite liked it, but not many others did. The alcoholic content is quite low. Most of the locals drink this instead of water, including the children! Does this sound at all wrong to anyone?
We also visited a basal wood carving workshop and pottery store and admired the beautiful things all handmade by the locals. We wished we had bags and bags of free space so we could take it all home!
Tonight will definitely be a quiet one as we have an early start tomorrow for our drive to Quito, our final destination of the tour! I cant believe six weeks has almost come to an end!
I will now get back to my book and enjoy the rest of the afternoon swinging away. Ahhh…
