Awake early again this morning, both of us at 6am. Did some reading until a reasonable hour and then got ready to head out. The only problem with this hostel is trying to find someone as it is family run and I think they live in an apartment upstairs. We couldn't find anyone when we were ready to leave so just headed to a cafe around the corner for some breakfast which wasn't the best but when we got back, someone was around for us to leave our bags and head out to explore.
Walked back through town and stopped at Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall) to take some pictures and also put the tripod to use to get a photo of mum and myself. Most times we have asked someone to take a photo, it comes out blury. We then continued to the Bamberger Dom which was founded in 1004 but the current one is from the 13th century after the previous one burnt down. It was beautiful inside with soaring ceilings and beautiful altars. Spent quite a bit of time inside, taking it all in and taking photos.
We then continued on an uphill walk to Kloster St Michael which is a Beneditcine Monastery. We had read the church was a must see, but once there we could not find the entrance to the church and neither could any of the other tourists around. The outside was worth the walk up though. Back down to town and we walked past Klein Venedig (Little Venice), a group of homes built on poles in the river.
We stopped at a cafe for some lunch before jumping on a train to Wurzburg, about an hour away. Staying at another hostel tonight, right opposite the train station which is very handy. We dumped our bags and walked into town and you guessed right, wandered around some more Christmas markets. We both liked these much better than Bamberg. Right in the Market Square surrounded by a church and old guest house which has a beautiful facade.
I also visited my first McDonalds here and not for the reason you think. They were right opposite the plaza and they had a second level which I thought would be perfect for a photo of the markets and I was right. Mum said I couldn't do it but I did. Found one store with some beautiful pieces that we haven't seen before, think we will be back tomorrow to buy.
Kept browsing and checking out the food stalls to try and figure out what everyone is eating. Can't believe how crowded they get with locals just hanging out. If it was this cold back home, you wouldn't get anyone outside.
We found a cafe overlooking the markets and had some dinner. They had Happy Hour so I had a Jumbo Long Island Iced Tea and mum had a non-alcoholic Five Fruits. Well, those of you who know me well, know I don't drink very often so a jumbo sized one of these pretty much knocked me out. If I don't sleep well tonight, there is going to be hell to pay. I'm surprised I can actually type this LOL
After dinner, we headed back to the hostel and budge that it is, we had to make the bed. Well, did we get the fit of giggles when one of the fitted sheets was too small. Anyone would have thought that mum had the jumbo alcoholic drink. It is now 9.30pm and mum is already snoring away, I think she put her book down at 9am and by 9am and 2 seconds she was off. I must admit though, she has done well because we have covered some kms every day walking and it isn't always easy, especially walking over the cobblestones.
Tomorrow we will hit the rest of the sights of the town before heading to Rothenburg for 2 nights.
