After we left the internet at Ouro Preto and had lunch we had a small wander around town. There were alot of churches in this town and very quaint and colonial streets and buildings. We also found a shop where you helped yourself to icecream and toppings and paid by the weight. What a great idea.
No rain this day and no rain the past couple of days. From Oruo Preto we had a long drive and stayed at a hotel at a service station again. Cold showers but at least they had air con. On Saturday we had another long day in the truck to Porto Seguro (Safe Port) which is where the Portugese first made land back in the 1500's. Campsite is a few kms out of town but right opposite the beach. Was a stinking hot day and glad to get off the truck, not so glad to have to sleep in tents for the next 3 nights. However, after putting up our tent, we found out there was upgrades available (I just assumed it would be way too expensive) and would only cost us R10 (about US$5) a night. Apparently the rooms aren't cheap, but neither is camping (as the camping is paid for us, we only have to pay the difference). So 3 of us are in this suite with 2 rooms, air conditioning, 5 beds, ensuite, air conditioning, fridge, hammock on the balcony and did I mention AIR CONDITIONING!!! What a deal.
I was on cooking duty first night here with my new team and we cooked up a fabulous meal if I do say so myself. Heaps of compliments which was nice as we had to cut up the chicken, crumb it and then cook it over a hot grill while it was about 35 degrees and of course we are in the cooking tent which loves to absorb the heat. After dinner, majority of us went into town to see if there were any carnival celebrations but they had finished them the night before. We visited this street where they have these fruit stands with alcohol, so you can either pick something off their menu or make up your own. I stuck with pineapple juice with vodka but it wasn't as nice as the one I had in Paraty.
Into bed about 2am and being in a room really paid off. Most people said they couldn't sleep because it was so hot, of course, some people didn't actually make it to bed until about 7am anyway. Yesterday was a great day. It consisted of: brekky, beach, pool, hammock, lunch, siesta in bed, beach, pool, hot shower, air conditioned room, dinner and back to air conditioned room. This is what a holiday is meant to be like.
Today I have come into town and organised my extension to my Brazil visa, save me having to get out to the airport in Salvadore to do it. Was only luck I found out the Federal Police had an office here and they were nice and helpful. Have wandered about town but too hot so about to head back to camp and go for a swim. We continue to Salvadore tomorrow.
