Hellllllllllooooooooooooo.
So took a bit of a hiatus, as I was without power or social activities for a week.
The week at fish lake was incredible. Amazing views of the lake, which is massive, and unlimited trails going all ways into the forest. And sorry, horses, which roam free throughout the ranch? Yeah that was there too. They were a little shy at first, but once they realized I was throwing extra food outside my door (ooooooooopsss bear alert) they knew I was there to play.
To sum up it was all just hiking, canoeing and cycling each n er'eday. Went to sleep exhausted each night because my body is NOT used to that kind of regiment. I was thankfully well supplied with what I needed, not just food, so everyday was like an adventure! Maybe got a little too adventurous, as I went on what was going to be a 1.5 hour bike ride which turned into 5.5 after I got extremely lost AND lost my phone, which happened to have a compass on it. Ended up biking back hours later after finding the road, asking a local hydro worker how to get back all the while with only ONE SHOE ON. I was alittle embarr, but also worried about spending a night in the yukon wilderness alone without provisions, and let me tell you if you see how fierce the forestlooks from a hillside, you do NOT want to be there unsupplied.
I did go camping one night on the lake. I found a nice spot with a firepit and an open clearing and spent the night there reading and eating. It's so unbelievably quiet at night, and when the sun finally sets around 11:30 you can only hear some birds and sometimes wolves/coyotes howling in the night. So pocahontas, but also so real. I definitely was a little scurred at points, especially having massive bear greenouts, some of the worst, thinking that they could smell that I had peanut butter for lunch and of course bears love PB as much as JF does, soooooooooooooooo (cause who doesnt really) I was a little alert for part of the night.
The people who ran the place were unbelievably nice, bringing fresh water everyday and even some freshly baked bread/brownies, which I did not hesitate to enjoy. TBH around the end I was looking forward to a nice nonbean-bread dish which was my main cuisine. It was however an unbelieveable experience, saw some beautiful scenery and got a real appreciation I think of what the Yukon environment is like. And its fierce.
Arrived in Dawson yesterday aftera 6.5 hour ride with some people in the back of a van. Very nice ride up, got here to my campsite, which is a gravel lot in the middle of town (felt great on my back). I fortunately had the foresight to book a different place for the next two nights. A refurbished w****house called "bombay peggys", I'm staying at the lookout. BTW this victorian inn (originally built in 1904) serves not just coffee/tea, but port & whiskey.......PORT & WHISKEY. cheap pre-d tonight I foresee. ALSO the pub attached to the hotel (all hotels have pubs/restos) happens to serve the unofficial drink of the yukon. A sourtoe whiskey. A glass of whiskey.......on ice............with a pickled toe in it. I may have to try it though.
Its a great city here, a lot of tourists but the whole place is just like walking back in time to the goldrush. all false front western style buildings, saloons,a huge gambling hall (oldest in canada, over 100 years old) where they do 3 different shows nightly, boardwalks, and actualy sternwheelers going up an down teh river. I actually freaked out when I got here and saw real sternwheelers going down the river under a golden sunset, it was a serious greenout.
Locals are very friendly, a kid yesterday walked by me and pretty much demanded (as in asked me twice) that I try local dawson W. I was inclined to accept his offer, it was delicious. I got pretty D by myself at the gambling hall and watched two of the shows. Literally was dying laughing when a lady named "diamond tooth gertie" was singing about bald men and rubbing bald mens' heads in the aud, including taking off their hats and checking if the hair was real. I was screaming. Then continued my gambling experience to play a slot machine called 'enchanted unicorn', obv with a name like that......i HAD to play. and I won oh yes I won $2.
Today is getting my pic taken looking like a sourdough day, possibly meeting rory's roommates for a trip to tombstone, a beatiful park in the region. pics are hard to get up from the comp, but look for them cause they will be jokes!
in case you're wondering the blister is fine and I have a new batch of cuts and scapes but nothing Dr. Fudu can't deal with.
"catch my drift, catch my draught!"--new phrase I learned yesterday.
PEACE
