So day one...So much stuff that I had to do today. The morning began with breakfast on the covered patio with lots of tropical plants all around us (apparently sometimes we have to compete with the lizards and squirrels for the fruit), then me and Eric (housemate from my program) walked to campus which is located about 10 seconds from our house. About our house...I am living with a Tico (word for Costa Ricans) family, Carlos and Ana are my houseparents, they have one son who lives with them, Pablo, and Ana's parents live in an attached apartment. Anyways, back to my day. Once i got to the university we were sent to sit in classrooms, where we would then be called to take our spanish placement oral exams. Unfortunately, they were a little disorganized so we sat for awhile, twiddling our thumbs, but eventually they got us all tested. So funny sidenote, here I am going to Costa Rica...I've taken two years of college spanish, gotten A's, think I'm good. Yea, definitely not the case. Talking to native speakers is a huge challenge, but luckily they are always extremely friendly and helpful, always encouraging you to keep stumbling through it and spitting forth what I'm sure is the verbal capacity of a three year old. But its certainly a challenge, and a fun one at that. In the afternoon we did a tour of San Jose, and I was excited to find out that they have strangely painted statue cows all over, apparently 120 in all. I also saw the major landmarks of the city, and felt like a major tourist being in a gigantic group of students. But that is pretty much how my first day has gone, I am all signed up for classes, and ready to go for tomorrow!
