Day 3 at the language school and head is about to explode. Think have not had to remember so many new things since uni! I am making progress however can still see the look of despair on my teachers when they have to repeat every sentence word by word for me to make sense of it. It will be some time before i can have a conversation!
The school is in the north of Yogya, which is really the modern side of town, slightly on the outskirts so not much to do around. Accomodation is pretty basic, room really like my Halls room! Except bugs are bigger here. One can say it's hot, 36 what feels like all the time (supposedly only 24 at night according to App but frankly have not felt it). Room is meant to have Air Con but really only blows hot air, so sleep with fan.
Teaching is on 1-2-1 for 6 hours per day, starting at 8am (yes am), after that homework. There are only a handful of other students at the school, from America, Quebec or Australia, all of them working or volunteering in Indonesia, apart from one on his travels as well.
Breakfast and lunch is served at guest house and school, rice at every meal of course. Evening meals at our discretion. I have so far been to pizza hut (before you judge me, this is where the cool and rich kids hang out, they even have valet parking!) and to a great Indian restaurant called Sangam House. Which is also one of the few restaurants around here to serve beer!
Managed to go and visit a Hindu temple about 25 mins out of town, Prambanan, the largest in south east asia apparently. Heavily damaged during earthquake but worth seeing.
Also went on Jalan Malioboro, the main shopping high street, with many local batik (fabric) shops and everything one needs. Absolutely no hassle towards tourists which is appreciated. I managed to buy a local mobile phone which works! Proud.
Right, back to homework and beer as a reward!
