Friday 8th December
Full day of sight seeing in Kalbarri, including Margaret River which was beautiful being viewed from Hawks Head lookout. Hawks Head lookout features a strange looking rock protruding from the side of the gorge in the shape of a giant bird's head. Afterwards we had a look at the impressive coastal cliffs including Mushroom Rock, which obviously looks like a huge mushroom, caused by the constant sweeping of the side against the softer parts of the rock. From there we drove out of Kalbarri along the scenic route, which takes you through the most spectacular pastural countryside we have ever seen in a foreign country, with the evening sun setting low and golden across the sweeping hills on the horizon.
We made it as far as our destination, Geraldton, but too late to pick up the part so we booked into a caravan park for the night, featuring the some of the scariest locals we have seen yet!
Saturday 9th December
Travelled into Geraldton to pick up the car indicator only to find out that they ordered the wrong part! We couldn't believe it! We had travelled a day early down the coast to get there on a day that their shop would be open and they had ordered the wrong part! They advised that there should be a mazda car wreckers specialist in Perth and told us we should try that before we give the van back.
The rest of the day was a complete waste as everywhere we travelled was too windy to enjoy properly and we finished the day by stopping in a information bay, reading our books and going to sleep.
Sunday 10th December
We decided to travel down to Lancellin and we rented out some sand boards to do some sand surfing on the huge sand dunes that tower behind the town. We were allowed to use the boards for 2 hours but could only manage just over an hour as the wind strength meant that we constantly had sand being whipped in our face when we were at the top of the sand dune. We had a good time though and had some spectacular crashes rolling down the sand dune! Covered in sand we returned the boards and continued along down road and stopped at the science centre for a while which had some pretty interesting displays and we also got some funny looks wandering around with sand all over us!
Last stop for the day was Yanchep where we booked into another caravan park and treated ourselves to pizza from the local shop as the wind would not subdue enough to allow us to cook on our stove.
Monday 11th December
We drove through Wanneroo on our way into Perth to being our search of the elusive car part we needed to repair the van. Eventually we found the mazda car wreckers only to discover that they didn't have the part either! Our last hope was to try a commercial wreckers a bit further down the road. We went there and at last our prayers were answered, they not only had the part but they also had the whole light section! *Cue Music* Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! After dancing around like idiots for a few moments we went to a hardware store, purchased a good screwdriver and fixed the light!
We then travlled on to Fremantle but unfortunately ran out of time to do much so we booked into a carvan park and walked along the beach enjoying the sunset.
Tuesday 12th December
A full day of enjoying Fremantle for the last time. We love Fremantle so much, it's laid back but vibrant atmosphere is perfect and we enjoyed walking around the parks and town before making our way down to the harbour to indulge in our last treat before leaving West Australia, Fish and Chips in the West Coasts best chip shop on the harbour by the water. It was beautiful and the food was fantastic! The best fish we had ever tasted and it was also nice to enjoy our first beer for some weeks! We slowly strolled back along the beach and enjoyed a stunning sunset.
Wednesday 13th December
An early rise as we had to travel back into Perth to give the van back by 10 o'clock. We arrived in good time and gave the van back with no hassles, they hadn't noticed anything with the light and we were so relieved! We set off for the other side of the city, where our hostel would be, on one of the free buses only to discover half way there that Kerry had left her camera back at the van place! We then spent an hour travelling around the city as we made our way back to collect the camera!
We spent our last day on the West Coast wandering around the city contemplating all the events of our adventures so far. It feels like we have only been gone a week in some respects but when we think back to Bali it seems like a lifetime ago! We have fallen in love with West Australia and wish in some ways that we had booked more time there.
Our last night was in Perth YMCA, full of the largest quantity of nut cases we have ever seen in our lives! Even worse than Luton! Went to sleep early as the next day we were departing for Adelaide at 6:30 in the morning!
