Kia ora tatou from us here in New Zealand!! We are now in Christchurch, New Zealand where we touched down around 5 hours ago. Our first impressions of the place are that it reminds us incredibly of home, it's winter here and all the trees are bare and people are walking around in jumpers and scarves. As the plane flew into the country we got an impressive view of the Southern Alps, which look absolutely incredible and are already partly covered in snow, such a weird thing for us to see after spending so long in the heat of Australia.
We were both really sad to be leaving Australia this morning as we have had the time of our lives and seen so many incredible things! We have both changed in character, grown in confidence through our achievements and have experienced things that we will never forget. Particular highlights of our time in Australia are, in no particular order:
- The people we have met and worked with, backpackers, Wet 'N' Wild and Australian Outback Spectacular staff
- Kerry's family, who have helped us out and welcomed us with more warmth than we dared to wish for
- The places: Ayers Rock, Great Barrier Reef, Whitsundays, Exmouth, Kakadu, Litchfield, Grampian Mountains, Flinders Range Mountains, Gippsland, Great Ocean Road, Sydney, Kalbarri, Perth, Fremantle, Kiama.
- The events that have shaped us: Bridge Climb over Sydney Harbour, diving at the Great Barrier Reef, climbing Ayers Rock, watching the fireworks at New Years in Sydney, spending Christmas with Kerry's family, pear picking, working at the theme parks, putting the campervan down a ditch on the west coast, spending valentines at Draculas Caberet, our first rainforest walk, watching sea turtles lay their eggs on the beach, tickling a sea turtle while scuba diving, snorkelling on the Ningaloo Reef, surfing, sandboarding and seeing in the wild some amazing Australian animals including Echidnas, Kangeroos, Wallabies, Quokkas, Budgies, Snakes, Spiders, Eagles, Turtles, Kookaburras, Dingos etc
Some quick facts that we have been thinking about on our last day in Oz:
- We have driven over 23,000kms in 6.5 months
- We passed through 6 state borders
- We have spent approximately $2,600 on fuel alone
- We visited 4 islands, Rottnest, Kangeroo, Moreton and Whitsunday
- Number of flights so far - 8
We hope to return to Australia one day in the future (when we can save up the money again) as there is still so much to be seen there. Now we are looking forward to the adventures that New Zealand will throw at us. Tonight and tomorrow night we are staying in a backpackers hostel called The Jailhouse, which as the name suggests used to be an old Jail that was in operation until 1999 and has now been refitted into a hostel. Our room looks like a little cell out of Prisoner Cell Block H, so tonight we will bang our cups against the wall and have a little thought of Paris Hilton! We shall update you all again soon in a weeks time or so once we hopefully have our campervan and are on the road again like the littlest Hobo's we are!
