Night location: Chania, Greece
Today we decided to drive 1.5 hours to Elafonisi beach which is located on Crete's southwest corner. At the edges of the crystal clear water the sand is pink which contrasts beautifully with the aqua and fine white sand. We arrived before the rush of day trippers which meant that we scored a fantastic spot on daybeds under cane umbrellas. On the way in we purchased an inflatable shark pool toy, complete with steering wheel and squeaking horn for Edith. At first she was unsure of the cool water but after some encouragement and the realisation that the steering wheel was very tasty, she started to kick her legs and giggle happily.
The water was waist deep for the first 30 meters and then dropped away over a coral shelf. Amber and Gareth swam around the coral point in the deep water which was absolutely stunning. Cretan pies and ice creams were purchased for lunch and while Edith, David and Gareth napped, Gemma and Amber went for another swim.
We all had a fantastic day until the grim realisation in the mid-afternoon that our car key was kaput. After opening the car manually, some 'security' fail safe kicked in, and the engine wouldn't turn on until the battery was removed. 3.5 hours later (and a lot of singing 'Old McDonald' to Edith) a Europcar man arrived with our new vehicle and we were away. Edith was a little champion and slept the whole way home. We are so fortunate that this happened in a place with both facilities and mobile reception!

Rosemary Chandler What an adventure!!
Althea Halliday I just love the feature picture on this blog, and the pictures on each blog and on Facebook embody one glorious day after the other. I am just so happy for you all. In fact, I am smiling as I write. I can also imagine Gemma and Amber striking off to swim together. They have been swimming together since their father took them, one on each outstretched arm, out into the deep. And how fortunate that you could get a new car where you did. A Kangaroo Island episode would have been taxing!
Bev Sounds as if you were lucky with the car!
