Night location: Vienna, Austria
The city centre of Vienna is absolutely spectacular to walk through. The Austrians certainly know a thing or two about building palaces and ornamental buildings. There was clearly a lot of wealth in the Austro-Hungarian empire!
The Kunsthistoriches Museum was built under Emperor Franz Joseph to accommodate the collections of art and antiquities acquired by the House of Habsburg. The building itself is a piece of art both outside and inside. It is worth visiting the museum purely to look at the grand staircase, marble columns, inlaid floors and painted ceilings. We wandered through the antiquity sections first and then the picture gallery. The Egyptian galleries were particularly well done featuring monumental papyrus-bundle columns and painted murals on the walls and ceilings.
From the museum we walked to the Imperial palace and then the Rathaus before stopping at the iconic Cafe Central for lunch. Opened in 1876 this cafe has been a popular meeting place for over a century including both Sigmund Freud and Leo Trotsky in the early 1900s. The desserts were exquisitely decadent and gave us strength for our afternoon of meandering the shopping streets of the city.
For dinner, we returned to Tian, a fine dining vegetarian restaurant that was as good as we remembered it to be. 15 small courses in total and every single one was both beautifully presented and delicious.
