Up at 5 today for a slow and relaxing start to the day. I found the Faroese equivalent of granola, which seems to be teasing my palette better than the common, and bland, muesli.
The clothes were almost dried hanging outside, but a lite mist forced me to hang them by the radiator for a bit. Shoes were still not dry.
Today I'm heading to the island of Viðoy, one of the northern set and home to the mighty mountain peaks of Villingadalsfjall and Nakkurin (norðari). Both peaks are around 850 meters (2,500 ft). These peaks also live by the tallest ocean facing cliff in the world, called Cape Enniberg.
The drive there was only mildly harrowing. Raining on a single lane track on the side of a precious mountain.
Oh, did I tell you about the tunnels? They're everywhere and really long. We're talking miles. And, they're single lane. Going out you have the right of way. Coming back you have to pull out into one of a dozen or more 3 car 'bays' cut out of rock in the tunnel. And, after you pull out you turn off your lights.
Going out was sort of ok. Imagine driving through the Hiawatha tunnel twice as far at 60km/h. The way back, not so good. I got through the first tunnel ok. On the second the oncoming cars were going so fast I couldn't make the first pull out bay. So, I had to back up in a dark, narrow tunnel (10' wide roadway with solid rock several feet from the road), for several hundred meters to let 7 oncoming cars out of the tunnel. They were grumpy and I was embarrassed. Stoopid American!
I started over again after several deep breaths and a self kick in the butt. Made it through pulling over about 5 times. Whew!
