We managed to leave Lima on Saturday morning but due to the traffic which was awful it took us 3 hours to get away from the centre and then the suburbs. We continued north up the highway, through the desert scenery with the Pacific ocean not far away. By Sunday lunchtime we had done 600 km and were in Trujillo. sadly Freddy suddenly had a broken half shaft, amazingly the same problem that Peter had had!
There was obviously nowhere to help us where we were so we exchanged lots of e mails and then phone calls with Antonio in Lima who has a workshop for landrovers. the only solution was to return to Lima.
This meant trying to organise a truck to take Freddy back and us too. We found a delivery company that agreed to put the truck on the back of an articulated lorry, 50 feet long and to take us too in the cab. This was obviously not in the rule book and we had to hide every time we saw the police.
It took 8 hours of driving to return to Lima, arriving at 9 at night to a depot and a compound in a very dubious. Part of town! the driver wouldn't let us leave as he said it was too dangerous to leave the compound at night! we duly climbed into the back of his truck and slept in our truck! This must qualify as the most bizarre place that we have spent the night so far!!!!
Antonio picked us up this morning and they started work immediately. He had the parts we needed and has promised that we will be on our way tomorrow. He then took us for breakfast and sorted out a hotel for us. We are so lucky to have found him, through the Peru Landrover club who recommended him to us. They have been so helpful and friendly. Peter took his truck to a different garage in Lima and 100 km later his half shaft turned out to be a real botched job and has had to be welded again. They have continued north and we intend to catch up with them by Monday in Ecuador.
Next Tuesday hopefully we are flying to the Galapagos islands. We are really looking forward to the 8 day cruise around the different islands.
We have a lot of travelling to so in the next few days and it will seem strange to be on our own. Sadly we will not have seen very much of Peru but hopefully we will have the time to see more in Ecuador.

Jon Goddard You've really seen two sides of Peruvians - the thieves and the very helpful! Enjoy the break in Galapagos - no half shaft problems there... :-)
Dan & Su Sounds like you've topped the motel room with the mirrors that you could hire by the hour!!!
