I spent two days in a Hostel in Quito before moving into the Meeting Hotel for the Galapagos tour. The first thing I did was freezing and suffering from altitude sickness. Quito is about 3000 m high and I came in the wet season, which is a bad idea. It rains a lot and nothing really ever dries.
However, the city has rather nice parts - especially Mariscal and the old (colonial) part of the city. It has huge park areas. I visited the "midad del mundo", a monument and exhibition site on the equator line. The exhibition includes a tour where an excited guide explains lots of "physical" phenomena that he claims only work exactly on the equation (such as water flowing downward throug a sink, whereas it would turn clockwise or counterclockwise only 1 m left or right of the equator line. I leave it to the educated reader to guess whether this can indeed be the coriolis force or whether a different explanation may be more likely.
