hi guys,
Well it's been a week so thought I'd have a whirl at updating this! The journey itself was pretty uneventful, even managed to change in Spain using my fluent Spanish to find out where the gate was (Mr Staley would've been sooo proud). Word of warning tho - never EVER fly Iberia - the height of in-flight entertainment was trying to avoid the trail of drool coming from the mouth of the sleeping Spanish guy next to me!
My first day in Peru was spent in Lima which is the capital city. In the morning I met some girls who were going to be on the same tour as me and we decided to go into the city centre. We tried to get a taxi but the first one didn't want to go that way (gotta love the Peruvians) and the second one waned to charge us dace soles - which we understood as 200 S$. we told him he must have been joking and decided to walk into town - al 16 km of it. At midday. In 25 degree heat. With no sun cream! great idea! Fortunately I don't really burn but went a bit pink (which is now brown) and am sporting a lovely go faster stripe where my bag straps was! it's a good look!! The town was beautiful so we spent a few hours there before getting a cab home. It was only then that we realised doce meant 12 - we had refused to pay the driver £3 oops!!!
The second day we took a 5 hour bus ride to Pisco - it was no national express I can tell you (and we all go.....) Pisco is the town that the national drink is named after - a very strong liquor - that night we all went out drinking Pisco Sours which are lovely - sadly after 2 drinks I was on the floor - oops!
Day 3 was the best day yet - we took the bus to the Pisco factory to watch the drink being mad 0 which involved a lot of sampling of the drink at 10am! slightly half cut we all got back on the bus and drove to a beautiful oasis in the middle of the desert! while our lunch was being made we got on some sand buggies and went pelting across the dunes which we then sand boarded down (a lot like snowboarding but on sand - and I went down on the board on my belly cos I'm special and didn'#t want to break my neck 3 days in) The boarding and the buggies were awesome - seriously driving across the desert at 100 kmh in a tiny little go cart s***s all over thorpe park anyday!! When we got back we spent the afternoon drinking sours by the pool before getting back on the bus from hell (a teeny little mini bus) to drive another 4 hours to Nasca!
Yesterday (day no. 4) was a bit of a scary day for me! we spent the first hour at a graveyard looking at mummies (that reminded me a lot of my girlies hehehe) which was fine but then we had to go in a pottery tour! OMG it was awful the place was crawling with terracotta I thought I was going to pass out my stomach was in knots I felt sick! Urgh! Everyone thought this was highly amusing and kept trying to get me to touch it! I perked up a little bit when we saw the finished articles which were painted so didn’t look like terracotta - they had the full karma sutra made out of clay - brilliant!
Straight after that we went to get a flight over the Nasca lines - theses are huge great patterns etched in the rock in Nasca that ancient people are thought to have made although there are theories that they were made my aliens! Anyway the lines are so big that they can only be viewed by plane. Not being a fan of flying anyway the prospect of getting on a 5 seater mini plane was terrifying - for some reason I was made to sit up front (co pilot) which did not add to the nerves - apparently just before take off I was white with fear!! As soon as we got of the ground tho something clicked and I began to absolutely love the little plane getting very excited when it would tip onto one side! The lines were amazing (pics are on my FB page) it was so cool! I was really happy when I got off the plane and turned to my fellow aeroplaners saying how much I enjoyed it. I was met by stony silence - out of the two plane loads of the group who had done the flight I was the only one who was not sick!! They were all green for a couple of hours after!! We spent the rest of the day by the pool having a bbq and drinking which was soo much fun - I got very excited when Gold by Spandau (spandex?!) Ballet came on and remembered all the sing alongs on the trading floor J.
Last night we got on the bus for a 12 hour journey to Arequipa where I am now! It’s a really beautiful city but there’s not much to do here! We’re all going out tonight as one of the group is celebrating her 30th bday and then tomorrow we’re off to Coala Canyon - one of the biggest Canyons in the world (Bigger than the little Grand Canyon hehe). Next week I’ll start the Inca Trail which I’m dreading due to my appalling fitness so send me positive vibes please!
Missing you all muchly! Stay in touch and if someone can text me the footie results tomorrow I’d love you for ever.
Loads of love
