So i arrived in Byron bay on Wednesday, it took 12 hours on an overnight bus from Sydney which was surprisingly good. Apart from wearing socks as gloves because I was so cold, I did actually manage to sleep about 8 hours of it. The buses are very good, they have wifi and are very spacious so it was ok. I think the biggest shock about the coach trip was seeing my old work colleague from Fulham get on the bus! He is travelling the east coast with his girlfriend, I knew he was out here but for him to actually get on the same bus as me at 6am was mad. Small world eh?! Once I arrived in Byron, I had to find a hostel as I didn't have one booked and thought I'd be crazy and wing it ;-) I had been told about a place called holiday village and luckily enough they could take me! When I got to the hostel I met a girl called Katie and as the reception saw that we were getting along they moved some things around and managed to get us in the same room which I now know was the best thing ever!! We totally hit it off and have been inseparable ever since. The next few days were then jam packed with activities, exploring and socialising :-) we went kayaking in the sea and saw 2 humpback whales, dolphins and a turtle! We climbed our way to the lighthouse at the top of the bay to see some amazing views and also the most easterly point of Australia. I (Katie was a wimp) went skydiving, 14,000 ft over the bay, probably one of the most amazing experiences of my life! Even though I only had 3 hours sleep as we had been out the night before (woops), I managed to do it and I was so proud of myself when I got to the bottom. My instructor was lovely (a lot smaller and older than everyone else's haha) but he was great. Within 20 minutes we were in the air and it took maybe 30 seconds for everyone to jump! It's so surreal but It is something that everyone should do in their lifetime.
Byron bay is a beautiful place and not only because of the weather and beaches but it's full of great people who are very talented and carefree. It's like a small hippy town, everyone has tattoos and dreads or are walking around in bare feet all the time. Most of the guys and girls surf so there is surf shops everywhere and everyone's very fit and healthy- I can honestly say I have never seen so many good looking people in my life. Myself and Katie felt very English, chubby and pale!!!!
We met a number of great people when we went out at night, the main bar is opposite out hostel so we went over every night as there was always an offer on food and drinks and was a great way to meet everyone. We soon came to learn that Byron bay is like a small community, we now walk down the street and are always bound to see someone we know! I never want to leave this place :-(
It's now Saturday and Katie has left me unfortunately! She is only travelling for 7 weeks so her journey is far quicker than mine. We have planned however to meet in Brisbane on Monday and travel to Noosa together for 4 days so I'm happy to have my friend back!
I am starting to realise that travelling is a bit of a roller coaster- you meet people, have a laugh and then they or you leave so your on your own again. You arrive at hostels and everyone is in groups playing games, sunbathing or drinking and it's up to you to make friends. You have to put yourself out there so much otherwise you will feel so lonely and no one is ever going to notice you sitting in your room alone because they are having so much fun......
