Tuesday 19th:
Up early today to be on the Oz Bus, but it only took a couple of hours to get to Hervey Bay. We got picked up at the Transit Centre by our hostel 'Palace Backpackers'. We got chatting to people in our block and a few of us went out to the shop and then the beach for a bit. Back at the hostel, a few of us sunbathed and chilled in the pool - it was a really hot day! Then some of us decided to walk back in to town and get pancakes - yummy! :) In the evening, we went on a bottle shop run to get goon for Fraser Island, then saw thousands of bats flying over the hostel and had all you can eat Dominoes pizza with everyone else.
Wednesday 20th:
Today we were up early and had our breifing for Fraser Island and were put into four groups of nine. In our group there was: me, Becky, Danni, Kezia, Bex, Andy, Ben, Kim and Martin. We sorted out all the paperwork etc, then drove to the warehouse and loaded up all the equipment into the 4WD - it was very tightly packed! Then we got food for the 3 days from Woolworths and headed to the ferry. On the ferry I realised that my camera had stopped working which was so annoying and meant I couldn't take any photos on Fraser Island. :( Sorted our food and alcohol into the eskys and loaded them back into the roof of the 4WD. On Fraser, we had a very bumpy journey to Lake Wabby where one of the esky lids flew out of a window and Danni had to jump out and go and get it! The sand at Lake Wabby was extremely hot and burnt my feet as I ran down the hill to the water to cool off and have a refreshing swim. Next, we drove to Eastern Beach and drove along it looking for the place we were supposed to camp. We found a place, set up camp and our group had a dinner of steak, sausages and salad. That evening most people from all four groups sat around in a big circle and played drinking games and got to know each other.
Thursday 21st:
Got up very early today because we had to leave and get to the next place while it was low tide. We packed up the tents and put everything back in the roof of the 4WD. We drove along the beach to Indian Heads where we then made breakfast on the beach. Afterwards, we walked up to Indian Heads to see the view - some people said they saw sharks in the sea from here! Then we drove to Champagne Pools, having a bit of trouble getting down the layby and up a hill to the carpark (until we all got out - fatties!). We chilled out in the water and sunbathed, it was amazing weather again. Today was Danny's 19th birthday and he somehow managed to get stung by a jellyfish which had been washed into the pools. We went back to the 4WD and had some snacks and drove to a shop on the island to refill our water and buy ice lollies. I then got behind the wheel and drove us along the beach to the shipwreck and then along the beach some more, before swapping with Becky. We then found the other groups and a place to stay. We set up camp and cooked spaghetti bolognese for dinner. We sat around drinking in the evening, but people weren't as up for it as last night and there were lots of dingoes around, so it was a much quieter night (apart from people shouting 'dingo'!).
Friday 22nd:
Got up early again, packed up and drove to Lake MacKenzie. The journey was awful as Ben drove so fast over the bumps that were inland and by the time we got there I felt really sick! We had to stop along the way to help push the other group as they were stuck in the sand. Lake MacKenzie was beautiful, such clear fresh water which you could drink! We chilled out in it for ages and sunbathed too, until the girls decided to build a human pyramid. We also did a group one. The guys tried to do one too, but it took them ages! After a while, we went back to the 4WD and had some lunch. Drove to the ferry terminal, stopping on the way to wait for people whoe were stuck. On the ferry, me and Becky snoozed as we were so tired. Back on the mainland, we drove to the warehouse, unpacked the equipment and cleaned the vehicle. We then got a bit lost on the way back to the hostel, but found it eventually. A few of us decided to go to the fish and chip shop to get some dinner. Finally could then have a shower and get all the sand off - yay!! :) In the evening, we drank goon then went to Hoolihans with lots of people from the trip which was nice. We stayed until the place closed then went back to the hostel and chatted there.
Love Fran....and Becky xx
