We pack our bags, ready to leave Adelaide. We've enjoyed our time here but, although we're sad to be leaving, it's exciting to have a car and be on the move again.
When we eventually escape the clutches of the scarily keen and friendly Brad, we walk down to the North Terrace and the Art Gallery of South Australia. A quick mosey inside before we stop for coffee and newspapers in the gallery cafe.
Somehow, it's almost 1pm already! We hotfoot it to Hertz to pick up our car or, as we like to think of it, our portable air conditioning unit. Have I mentioned how blooming hot it is today? Really flipping hot.
Back to B-rad's in our shiny new car to pick up our bags. We feel so free and mobile with our new wheels! We have a quick bite to for lunch, then bade Brad farewell (hugs and good wishes all round) and run for the hills.
Our first Adelaide Hills wine stop is Tapanappa Vineyard. They offer a comprehensive free tasting. (Free! They give you wine, for free!! No strings attached! This cellar door thing is brilliant. The Adeladians must rinse this). First up is Foxy's usual favourite, a Riesling (grapes not grown there, but they "needed something fresh to begin the tastings with." I think this just means they needed a rubbish white that they could blame on another vineyard, so that everything after the rubbish white tastes better. It did). Then a comparison of their 2013 and 2014 Chardonnay (we both preferred the 2014, which was smoother). Then a comparison of their 2013 and 2014 Pinot Noir (we prefer 2013 this time - less challenging. I'm sure wine buffs would prefer the 2014, but it was a bit peppery for me). Finally a Merlot Cabernet Franc which was our overall favourite.
Our second wine stop is Penfold. They charge $10 for their tastings, which is a bit cheeky given that all the others we've seen are FREEEE. However, you do get plenty of wines to try for your $10, so Foxy got stuck in (muggins here had offered to drive to the Airbnb...).
Tastings done, a cheery Alex hops in the car, whom we've named Pandora, to be driven to tonight's lodgings. We arrive at 6pm, just as our host is going out for the evening, and we have the place to ourselves! We nip to a nearby supermarket for dinner, melting in the 34^C at almost 7pm. In fact, it's so hot that the freezer in the supermarket has given up and joined the appliances in the sky.
Back at the Airbnb, I rustle up a nearly carbonara (tastes of home), and we plan the next few days.
