Packing up Brendan (our cooler bag) with pre-prepared picnic treats (cheese sandwiches, oh how very glam) we caught the bus into town to the Sydney Cricket Ground, or SCG.
For today we were going to watch Day 2 of Australia vs West Indies!
Alex had booked this months ago. In fact, it was practically the first thing he did after having confirmed flights out to Australia. Hilariously, in the forwarded confirmation email he sent to Alice he stated, "bet it rains now..."
So we enter the ground under leaden skies, and watched all of 11.2 overs before it proceeded to chuck it down for the rest of the day.
11.2 is important because apparently, you get a 100% refund if they play less than 10 overs during the day. Gaaah!
Happily enough however, as they did play under 25 overs, we should be able to claim a 50% refund instead.
Anyway, the small amount of cricket we did get to see was very entertaining. Carlos Braithwaite, the Windies all-rounder enjoyed carting the ball to all quarters (a couple of 6s and 4s in a carefree 69), before losing his wicket to a decent ball (poor shot) from James Pattinson. We saw him bring up his 50 too!
Oh, and there were 501 people in fancy dress, all in matching Richie Benaud outfits in homage to the late great commentator, who passed away late last year.
And then the rain won the day. :(
So we finally abandoned the cricket at 16.00... But have no fear dear, we had a Plan B! We hopped on a bus (Alice really quite excited at this point ), and made the short journey to Catmosphere!
What is Catmosphere I don't hear you ask?
A: It's a cat cafe.
What's a cat cafe I still can't hear you say?
A: It's a place where for a small sum of money, they feed you coffee and cookies, in a room that is habited by friendly cats.
What's not to like?
Alice books the hour long session an hour before we leave - it's much less busy thanks to the rain - and we arrive early. The friendly lady serves us our coffee, and we wait for a couple of minutes before being ushered upstairs to the cat room.
Here there are 16 rescue cats in a large room, that are all up for adoption, but in the short term require some TLC. Visitors to the cafe provide that TLC. Happily, there are plenty of spots where the cats can hide out of reach, as well as apparatus for them to climb over. Never the less, at first we're not sure if we like the place. All of the cats are lethargic and tired, almost appearing drugged. But working on a couple of cats in order to gain their trust, by the end of the hour we've made a couple of friends.
Alice befriends a chilled out Misty lookalike, and Alex enjoys playing 'catch the bait' with a younger, more energetic cat.
The hour flies by, and we leave content with making some furry friends, but are sad to leave them. It's time to go home to prepare for Adelaide & beyond!
