Splish splash smash.
We went to watch Christy's chap Dan play water polo in Drummoyne pool. Neither of us has ever seen (or played) water polo before, but what we learned while watching is as follows:
- Team of 7 players.
- 4 quarters/periods of 8 minutes each, although the clock stops when play does, like rugby.
- 30 second directional plays.
- A sin bin system of 'exclusions' of 20 seconds for fouls which happen on a surprisingly regular basis, but not for dunking your opponent which happens constantly and seems to be absolutely fine...
I think we did rather well.
Dan was playing for the UNSW Wests Magpies who lost by a goal on the match we watched. A nail biting finish when, with 8 seconds to go, the Magpies' coach called a time out, readying for one final play. Alas, it was not to be. We stayed for another match and a half, and had a burger for lunch. It was a bit messy, and I accidentally fed most of mine to a friendly pigeon.
Water polo-ed out, we got a bus to Balmain East to check out where we hope to station ourselves on NYE to watch the fireworks. We found a grassy park which looks lovely, and has a great view of the Harbour Bridge, but I'm sure it will be teeming with people on NYE. We plan to get there at 10am to bag a spot for the day and evening!
Realising it's 5pm already (not sure how that happened) we hop on the bus back in to the Town Hall. A quick stop in the Queen Victoria Building (QVB) as I spot an ABC shop with Doctor Who stuff... And finally a train back to Stacey and Jaypee's place in Carlton.
We make Stace some signature pasta and pesto (not our best effort, actually), and watch Spectre, before turning in.
