Test Run
After following Sean Scott Photography & numerous others on Instagram for several years & being inspired to see the beautiful Lady Elliot Island ourselves we finally made it & happily were not disappointed. Finally some lovely warm, still & sunny weather felt like summer & the eco resort was everything we expected & more. Our basic cabin was only steps from the beach, past turtle nests in the sand - some still with eggs - not to be disturbed......
Sunrise each morning over the lagoon was a wonderful spectacle especially as the water was like glass & snorkelling in there at high tide was a magic experience amongst all sorts of coral, fish, clams, reef sharks & my favourite turtles!
We had a glass bottomed boat trip & snorkel on the west side to see some of the mantra rays which this island is famous for. They are enormous animals & we heard some great stories from those who went diving & just sat on the bottom while the mantas circled above them.
Great buffet food, a cafe/bar with "real" coffee & the most friendly helpful staff made dining a treat too. We had drinks & antipasto platter on the sand to watch the sunset over the Coral Sea & felt pretty special to see the sun rise & set over the ocean - not something we can do very often!
Again we attended several information sessions about the reef, the mantas, turtles & fish feeding plus walked around the island ourselves to explore. It's quite small with a grass airstrip down the centre. The sand is all coral ranging from tiny sand grains through every size up to full sized shells & coral chunks. It was so tempting to souvenir lots of lovely pieces but of course this is not allowed so I did as Josh Pyke suggests in his song "The Summer" ........
"But time is like the ocean.....you can only hold a little in your hands, so we'll swim before we're broken & our bones become like coral on the sand". I sure hope there'll be lots more swimming before that time comes!!!
