Test Run
After a night at an airport hotel in Seattle we flew to Maui in Hawaii for a few days of sunshine, swimming, snorkeling & just catching up after our hectic time. The resort area is on the dry western side of the island & isn't as lush & green as we expected. The Sheraton hotel grounds were green with palm trees, frangipani etc & our room was great - ocean view in a quiet section far away from the central core. Watched the flare lighting & cliff dive ceremony, loved the sunsets from our balcony, did some snorkeling, sat on the beach & by the pool & enjoyed the tropical fruit breakfasts. Went down the beach to the Whalers Village for some shopping & the obligatory shave ice which was quite delicious. Watched a Maui Jim Oceanfest ironman/triathlon event & had a chat with a couple who told us the Australians Jackson Maynard & Jett Kenny were competing so we watched for a while & saw Lisa with her son. Geoff did a tour to see the sunrise at Haleakala extinct volcano then rode a bike down the mountain but I wasn't interested in the 2am pickup time! so I took the shuttle to Lahaina town for a bit of a wander about instead. We had a fun final night Teppanyaki dinner compliments of the hotel because we attended a session about their time share program. There's no way we're interested in buying into property in Maui but it was interesting to see a villa in the Westin resort. Goodbye to Hawaii - it's been interesting but once again I'm struck by how much better most of our Australian beaches are. Their resorts are lovely but very crowded, very expensive & the extra fees, taxes & tipping drive us crazy. We are so lucky in our country that GST is included in a listed price & we don't have obligatory 15 - 20% tipping. Mahalo Hawaii - maybe see you again if James stays in Canada.
