Test Run
Three days in Paris were the perfect ending to our European experience. We spent one day doing traditional tourist sightseeing, one at the finish of Le Tour de France & one doing less well-known activities in Paris. Our taxi ride from St Lazare railway station took us around the very exciting traffic of the Arc de Triomphe where there are 12 lanes but no marked lines & apparently all car insurance is void! Had dinner at La Petit Cour restaurant where we had celebrated my birthday 6 years ago. The food was wonderful, as before, & we had a table outside in the courtyard as it was a lovely warm evening. Saturday we made it into the Musee D'Orsay without having to wait in a queue as I'd bought our tickets the day before & we joined a guided tour of the major masterpieces. This was very informative & we saw paintings we wouldn't have noticed, as well as some famous ones. Had a drink stop at the roof cafe then back through the Impressionists gallery for another look at our favorites. Took the very good & easy to use Metro underground to Montmartre for lunch in the Place du Tertre - familiar from Geoff's jigsaw puzzle. This pretty square was really crowded but still has artists plying their trade & cafes all around. Climbed the 300 or so steps to the top of Sacre Coeur church tower for a wonderful view over Paris. I'm happy to say my knees survived the many narrow, stone steps we've climbed & descended over this whole trip.
