I'm now in proper South America, where anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. After my comfortable yet long 24 hour bus journey north, we arrived in San Pedro de Atacama, a village in the middle of the Atacama desert. Its about 2 hour away from anything, and our stop off before getting into Bolivia. It has quite a lot going on and is quintessentially a tourist village. We came here to book our excursion to Uyuni in Bolivia. After arrving at our hostel, who told us they had hot water, we paid and then found out they had no water of any kind. Aparantly there was some coming soon, so we had to walk around stinking all day. Then when we did get water it was just a trickle of ice cold water. Ah well, beggers cant be choosers.
Having nothing to do until our trip on Tuesday, we decided to go sand boarding in Death Valley. This was great. You walk up an enormous and dune and strap a board to your feet and fly down into the valley below. It was knackeing walking back up, but so rewarding. It was just a blue sky and sand for miles around and none of us could get to grips that we were completely isolated in the middle of knowhere. Next up we wandered round some salt caves before getting to Moon Valley and hiking up some more sand dunes so see sunset. It was fantastic and bloody cold.
After a meal and a quick pack up, we had an unexpected knock at the door. It was our travel agent from town who told us that the guide was unable to get back from Bolivia and we wouldnt be able to go that day. On top of that, the ATM didn't work and we couldn't use our cards and had sod all money, but I didn't expect things to run smoothly anyway. You just have to laugh about it really. Next up Bolivia - hopefully? *said nervously*.
