Another leisurely start to the day but Rodd wasn't feeling the best and decided to sleep in longer so I headed out by myself to the East Village. This one is going to be a bit slow and boring cos I really did nothing but wander the streets, heading over towards NoHo ( north of Houston ) and SoHo ( South of Houston )... these are by far my favourite areas of the city I think. I did find a couple of nice little shops that had really reasonable prices so bought a top.
Along the way I found McSorleys Ale House which was open in the 1800's and is New Yorks oldest pub.
Then Rodd text me that he was feeling up to going out so we agreed to meet at 33rd St.. wasn't any problem, we both got on a 6, Rodd heading downtown.. me uptown and met within 15 mins of our first texts!!
As we were only a block from Empire State Building we wandered over to have a look... we didn't bother going up to the observatory cos we'd seen the view from TOTR.
Must have been around 1ish so I'm thinking lunch!! We found a nice looking place, and really whenever you go into a cafe and buy something you have to use the toilet cos who knows when you'll find another one. So I said to the girl "where's the restroom"? her reply was "3124"...ummmm I beg your pardon?.... 3124 ..... what does that mean??? to which I received a roll of the eyes and "you don't know"??? ... well no, I don't.. would I have asked??? ( no I didn't say that but sheesh... I didn't need the attitude! ) she then goes on with ... and I quote... "whatever" ( accompanied by more attitude and another eye roll ), "door code". OOooooh door code!!! Gee thanks!! Not long after that I heard a man mutter as he walked away from her " have you ever been on the counter before??".
From lunch we wandered around and found a place called Manhattan Mall... oh wow, I love this place. We went into Charlotte Russe and there was great stuff and great prices so I bought another top... yes I know, I wasn't going to shop before Orlando but $9.99 for a top?? And then I discovered J C Penney... OMG this place is awesome. I bought a good winter jacket for $20... my first thought was "what's wrong with it"?? ( not that I really needed it but couldn't leave it on the rack for that price! ). Rodd left me shopping in there and made his way back to the hotel... with my concise subway directions!! I could have bought and bought and bought but in the end didn't end up buying anything else... the voice of reason always stops me " you like it, want it, but do you really NEED it???", I guess if I have to have a voice talking to me inside my head that's not a bad one to have!!
Home for a rest, and a bit of blogging ( sorry Mum... storytelling!) then we headed out to see SLEEP NO MORE. It had started to lightly... sleet I guess you'd call it.. like snow but just turned to rain before it actually hit the ground. We once again decided to not even try to get a taxi, I seriously don't know what it is with them, everywhere but try to get one!! Also being 6ish most people are on the way to the theatre. We had to get to W27th St between 10th and 11th (the long blocks) and subway only goes to 8th!! So a few transfers later we came up at 27th... still lightly sleeting but not too bad.. mind you I couldn't feel my face by the time we got there!
Now this is not your average show, this is an emursive experience. It's a cross between Macbeth and Alfred Hitchcock... very weird!! You have to wear a mask and are taken in an elevator and dropped at a floor, different groups are dropped at different floors. Then you just wander around, you can go up and down stairs.... there's 5 floors ( I think! ).. and as you go from room to room you find clues.. and come across scenes the actors are playing out, they move around too so if you see one you follow them to the next scene... not for the straight minded, this show has nudity and lots of very bizarre scenes. All in all a wonderful experience... and yes... once again I would never have heard of it without TripAdvisor!! I didn't take any photos because we couldn't be bothered carrying the camera around anymore!! However I'd encourage you to have a look at their website. http://sleepnomorenyc.com/index.htm just click on the titles to read reviews etc.
They did have a bar and a great jazz band playing after the show but we were pretty beat... and I wore my contacts to fit under the mask so my eyes were feeling irritated. We stayed for one glass of champagne each ( $10 a glass!! what the?! ) then made our way back to hotel via subway for a relatively early night! 11ish!! Oh yes we got Maccas for dinner cos didn't have the energy to find anything else!!
Well only one more day in NYC...

Mum Yes, I agree Larne...."lovely buildings"...they're quite unique aren't they...very "American"! You had me worried for a moment there with the "No More Sleeps" in your Blog title..thought it meant you were partying so much you just weren't going to bed! However, that "show' or whatever it was, sounded quite bizarre. Shopping sounded great... Love..xx
cafe_travel Know the spot well!
cafe_travel We tried this out too. If you're headinig back to the East Village try out a Mexican place for unch or dinner caed Mercadito's. Food is excellent!
Debra It's looking pretty worn out Larn - you've certainly gotten every single penny worth out of that! x
cafe_travel They have iPhone apps too!
cafe_travel The East Village is where we stayed the first couple of times we went to NYC. It's so cool, lots of funky shops and people. And LOTS of dog parks. I'm sure NYC gets cold but we've only ever been there when it's warm so I can't imagine it. I'm going to let your trip to McDonalds slide..but make that the ONLY one! OMG so much good food over there, leave the fast food behind!
Frank Michell OK....OK.....go easy on poor old Rodd.....have an easy day and let him catch up........we need him and so do you......Dad
Debra I bet you are already planning your next trip to New York as we speak! Sure you'll love New Orleans just as much..... oh to travel and travel and travel - what fun! x
