First full day of the cruise so of course as usual we woke up at 6.30am and decided since
we were awake we should hightail it to the buffet breakfast before the other 1954 people woke up! Good move as there was hardly anybody there which made it a far better dining experience ( you might have figured after the check in story that we're not much for waiting in lines with the rest of the herd! ).
Once we’d had our powdered scrambled eggs we made our way down to the "Oasis" which is a
kid free zone… nice deck on the rear of the ship looking out over the gorgeous blue ocean…. Aahhhhhh. Rodd had a lovely little kip and I raced back to the cabin for my laptop so I could spend the next hour typing up yesterdays events….Hopefully this will become a morning ritual so I can keep up with what's happening cos I know if I don’t get something down daily there’s no hope I’ll remember it all when we get home. Unfortunately some people can’t read and groups of parents with their noisy kids came traipsing up and down the stairs talking and stomping… grrrrr…. I know, I know I’m sounding like a grumpy old woman but seriously.. This is a big ship… what part of “KID FREE ZONE” do they not understand, maybe I should go and sit in the kids pool, see how they like it!! (rant over)
Blog written and another quick trip to the cabin to drop off the pc. Really finding the way back to the cabin is a bit like working out the subway in NYC.. Quite challenging and I must say I have worked it out but Rodd got hopelessly lost a couple of times!
Every night the cabin steward turns down the bed and leaves the next days programme for us
so after breakfast we grabbed that from the cabin and headed out to see what the day would hold… first stop was the Connextions Bar for morning trivia, we got there when they were already up to number 6 but the guy hosting encouraged us to come up and get an answer sheet and join in so naturally we did!! Hmmmmm.. Maybe 9am is a bit early for our brains, we managed 7 out of 20 and my brain just went into major brain freeze refusing to divulge even the most simple answers.. My mantra was “ I KNOW this”.. but it just wouldn’t come!! Oh well it’s all fun. We did manage to rope a passing guy into sitting and helping out for a couple questions until he said he was on his way to meet his wife and she wouldn’t be very happy with him if he stayed!!
11.15 am there was Bingo in the Marquee theatre which I’m either ashamed or proud (depending on whose reading this ) to say was my first ever real bingo… we had a set at home when I was growing up and used to play with the family but I’d never done it for real. We also had our first drink of the day… Pina Colada for me and a VB for Rodd!! Ohh well we are on holiday.
I think after Bingo we went back to the Connextions Bar and once again came in half way
through the Crew v Passengers charades match… I love charades and it was another game I played lots with my family as a child/teenager. They didn’t have enough teams so were asking the crowd for volunteers so of course I had to play… our team lost.. But my thing was really hard to act out.. Boom Boom Pow… I think I did a pretty good job of it but I was a bit handicapped by my fellow team mates… no idea!!! Oh well, once again I’ll say… it was a lot of fun so I had to quell my competitive streak.
I think we wandered up to the Pool deck next cos Rodd wanted to go in the table tennis
tournament.. I popped into Plantations buffet and grabbed a small bowl of salad to keep me going then relaxed on a pool lounge while Rodd jumped around the table tennis table.. He lost but … oh well, it was fun!! ( you seeing a recurring theme here yet?? )
It was about 1pm by now so time to go get something more to eat, I got a bowl of zuchinni and garlic soup with a brown roll and we went back to the pool deck to sit at the bar ( soup and pina colada, strange combo!) …. We stayed there to watch the Battle of the Sexes scavenger hunt. Basically it’s a team of 6 women v 6 men and the MC says “ go find me a ……teabag, set of dentures, woman with a tattoo on her foot….. Etc etc” it was entertaining to watch and very funny at times.
So now it’s around 2.30 and really needing some more sustenance so back into plantations
for more salad. The food is pretty good but not a lot of vegetarian options so far apart from salad… I think they should have a fresh juice bar ( they do have a chocolate bar and an icecream bar so why not juice?? ) .. I’m soooo missing my daily juices and my body is complaining just a little ( maybe it’s also complaining about all the pina coladas but hey… I’m on holiday ).
Hmmmm, just realised I’ve got the times all wrong but I’m sure no-one cares…. We fit sooo
much in we were flitting from here to there doing all sorts of things… at 2.30 we were actually in the Marquee theatre playing Jeopardy, we saw a couple looking a little unsure so we roped them in to playing with us, after our effort with Bingo we knew we needed some help!! They were a lovely couple and even though our brains combined didn’t know half the answers we none the less thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and have organised to meet this couple ( Gary and Kaylene ) for morning trivia tomorrow!
The rest of the afternoon we wandered from here to there, spent a bit of time in the casino
and lay out on the deck in the shade just listening to the waves from the ship sipping on my Pina Colada ( from now on in only to be referred to as PC )…… around 7ish we headed back into Plantation and I had a bowl of vegetable soup followed by the best stir fried noodles and
veg with chilli.. Of course accompanied by a PC.
Time for a little nanny nap so off we went to our cabin…. Then headed out again around
8.30 ( usually my bedtime!). Our cabin is on deck 5 which is where the reception area/atrium is, they had a band playing easy listening music so we sat there for a bit.. No PC …this time I had a coffee, a liquer coffee!! The band finished playing not long after we got there so we made our way up to the Connextions Bar again and watched, but didn’t play the Famous Faces trivia.. We
would have got about 41 out of 45 if we’d played and Debra would have been very annoyed with me to know that one of the ones we couldn’t identify was Elvis Costello!! Sorry Deb!
Next stop the Marquee for the show “ So you wanna Dance” this was fabulous! Great costumes, music, lighting and choreography. Unfortunately we couldn’t take photos of that but it was quite the spectacular…
We had about half an hour before the Comedy show started at 11.15 so went back to the
Atrium where the same band was playing. The atrium has open balconies on decks 6 and 7 so we started watching from deck 7 and then moved down to deck 6 where we had the whole area to ourselves so we danced around up there in our little private spot.
Next stop the Comedy show.. A guy called Mike Bennett.. He was really good, I howled with
laughter and had tears streaming down my face… Cass if you’re reading this I was somewhat like I was at Carrot Top!
Nearly the end of a fabulous first day at sea… just need something more to eat cos we’ve
been so busy all day. Grabbed a bite at the Grill and sat out on the back deck.. It’s great out there at that time of night..not another person in sight, it was like we were the only 2 on the ship. Great way to end the day.
Fell into bed around 1am and quite enjoyed the gentle roll of ship rocking me off to sleep although I did wake up some time through the night and had a brief thought of those poor people on the Costa Concordia.. you just sort of take the rolling and dipping as part of the trip so I guess they wouldn’t have thought too much of it at first!
