From Ajaccio we travelled by a little train to Soussari where we were to catch a bus to Bonifacio at the bottom of the island. We hadn't had an auspicious start to the day as we'd had a huge disagreement the day before and the after effects were still lingering and poisoning our interactions with each other.
When we arrived at the railway station in Soussari, a very unprepossessing and bleak place, Fons dropped all his baggage at my feet with nary a by-your-leave and told me to look after it as he was going to go off into the town to try to solve the problem we'd had the day before which had been the cause of our disagreement.
So I was left there sitting in the only place outside in the sunshine - a ledge which happened to be outside the public lavatories. I wanted to be outside as inside the station was extremely dark and forbidding with some rather unsavoury (to me) characters hanging around. At least I felt if I were outside I was safer…
Occasionally a train would pull in to the station and there would be a bit of action to watch, but mostly there was nothing to do but look at the stationary rolling stock, rusting rails and other various detritus of a backwater railway station. I could have read one of the books that I was lugging with me everywhere we went, and indeed I did so briefly but my irritation and annoyance with Fons got in the way and I found rather than read, I just wanted to sit with all my selfrighteous anger.
