Dear all,
Well we have had a couple of interesting days.... we left you last time in Queenstown where we were keeping our fingers crossed for a dry spell so we could go Paragliding.
We awoke to the rain hitting our camper really hard and the realisation that our 9.30 appointment with the skies would not be kept. We decided to have breakfast at a little chocolate place, we had hot choc and croissants, yummy! Then we headed over to upload our photo's for the blog, during this process we managed to get a virus on the camera card, very bad news as we hadn't yet managed to get our photo's burnt to CD yet.
James took it to a local camera shop and a wonderful lady managed to save most of the photos and put on a CD for us.... yippee, crisis averted. To celebrate we had another ferg burger and confirmed our paragliding would be attempted at 2.30.
We got taken to Coronet Peak ski fields, where we took the ski lift to the top then climbed to the top of the Coronet Peak mountain. The views were amazing and I didn't freak out about the massive drop. We got strapped into the gear and attached to the guide and parachute, with a few steps forward we were up in the air. This was brilliant and the thermals were excellent so we soared for ages before heading towards the landing site. James thought it was brilliant and got lots of great footage. I on the other hand wouldn't let go of the straps so my poor gliding instrutor had a pretty tame ride.
That night we went to Yan, my gliding instructors restaurant for Italian food. This was excellent and we were stuffed. We decided to head over to another internet site and try to upload our photos again.
Thursday, we awoke to more rain, worse than yesterday. We had to call off our planned trip on the gondala and luge much to Katie's disappointment. We had another yummy croissant breakfast and sent home a package of gifts then headed across the mountains to Fox Glacier.
Fox Glacier is a small sleepy town with nothing to do apart from the Glacier walking. We chilled out Thursday then got up early Friday for our half day walk on the glacier. We changed our boots and put on waterproofs, then we were really to go walk on ice. We walked across a few little rivers then up over the mountain before we were setting foot on the glacier. The heavens opened and we spent the next few hours trudging across the ice in the rain. It was a great experience but I was surprised how dirty the ice looks... this is due to the rocks that it scrapes across.
We are currently in Nelson, having spent the last couple of day driving through the rain to get here. We are hoping to find something to do in the rain tomorrow as it is forcast again. We can't complain though as we have had some really great weather so far on the trip.
James is enjoying our visits to lots of galleries, we have even bought some New Zealand pottery to bring home. We found a great little street called South Street which has the traditional homes.
We've realised that we are coming back in a week so we've got a few more fun things to do before we get back to Auckland.
Signing off for today,
Katie + James xx
