Dear family and friends
First of all. We hope that the amount of rain fallen in Denmark haven't affected you too much by destroying basements, cars or what not. It looked pretty severe from what we've been able to see and read on the danish news sites.
Focus back to us! We arrived by airplane to Hanoi in northern Vietnam this morning. We thought that we would give our selves a treat and got a licensed taxi. Unfortunately the taxi driver was not able to locate the adress we gave him so we ended up driving around the center of Hanoi for one and a half hours all though the trip should only have taken 40 minutes or so. Lucky for us we had arranged a fixed price for the trip - 300.000 dong. So we ended up getting a free tour :) During the almost endless circling about we got waved in by a police officer and the taxi driver actually hit him gently. They talked for about 5 minutes outside the car and we're got more and more ancious about what was happening, but everything worked out perfect.
We got to our Hostel, where we're only staying for one night for the price of 88.000 dong pr. person (the equivalent of about 20 kr).
We left our bags at the hostel and went into the city center. We took a recommended walking route by LonelyPlanet and saw many of the smaller streets with small shops. Every shop selling one type of item. Halfway through the route we began to feel the strain of the heat, humidity and chaos. By chaos we mean the cars and scooters driving like nothing we'd ever seen before.
We went out to a local "restaurant" not far from the Hostel, where we got a local dish called pho which consist of nuddles and chicken including drinks for around 12 kr. each.
We've experienced that Hanoi is a bit to chaotic for our taste and are now planning a trip for Sapa (also in the northern part of Vietnam - 380 km from Hanoi). There the natural sights will be in focus and the tempo hopefully a bit slower.
Love Martina and Christian
