We made it into Russia without too many difficulties. The thirteen hour train from Riga was interesting as the Latvian/Russian border arrived at 1.30am, in the middle of nowhere. By this point most of the passangers on the train were in their velour tracksuits, fast asleep. The Russian border guards gave us all a rather rude awakening demanding passports, and inspecting the tripod on Kit's bag. Once the border was out of the way we tried to sleep - we probably had the two worst berths in our carriage. The train came to a halt in the morning, but as we couldn't see any sign telling us where we were, we had to assume it was Saint Petersburg, so we got off! After being thoroughly ripped off by a crazy Russian taxi driver in his Lada we walked about 2 miles to find a hotel that had a free room! Over the last two days we have enjoyed the sights of this rather European Russian city: St. Issac's cathedral, Kazan Cathedral and today the Hermitage, which unfortunately looks like a building site from the outside as it's being repainted! We successfully bought a train ticket to Moscow for tomorrow night from the most grumpy, most unfriendly, most unhelpful typically Russian woman I have ever come across. Next stop: Moscow.
