What a Day!!
First we took a ferry to THE ROCK - Alcatraz Island. We wandered around the Island and watched a short Discovery film about the Island - was actually really interesting to know all the different things that the Island has been used for - Military, Prison, Indian Occupation, National Park
We did an audio tour within the cell block - this was GREAT - it told you so much while giving you a walking tour - and it was told by actual officers and prisoners who had been then. The place was incredible - I would not like to have been there - the cells were so small, and you can hear and see San Fran so easily that it would have been horrible knowing everything was so close. Neat fun learning about the escape attempts as well - not many succeeded - well acutally only three people were never found so they don't know if they actually survived once they fleed the island or not?
After we got back to the city we hired mountain bikes and biked from the wharf to the Golden Gate bridge and across to the other side. It was really cool - although there was so pretty steep places - my butt is pretty damm sore from the first bit of exercise that we have done in a while. Views on the bridge were awersome and also from Vista Point on the other side - that is a great viewing area.
We biked back around late afternoon - and then Gerard got his birthday and Christmas presents!!! We got a PSP for him - he is sick of these long bus rides and airport waits with nothing to do!!! He also got a couple of pairs of Levis as San Fran is the home of Levis and they are very cheap here - around 20 pound a pair!!
We had to catch a bus tonight as we are travelling via bus to Las Vegas and it goes at night - thats right budget travellers - bus ride and hotel all in one!! Luckily we had heaps of time to get to the bus station - bus didn't leave until 11pm because it took us about two hours to get from the hotel to the bus station - mainly becasue there was a huge Chinese parade in town and it stopped all the buses working - we ended up walking about 10 blocks with our packs on - NOT FUN
We did get to the station early though and managed to get on the 9pm bus so that was good. What wasn't good was having a seat which did not recline so we took turns trying to sleep in the reclining seat.
Got into LA at 0600 and then left at 0800 - will need to have a lima lima delta (little lay down) when we get to Las Vegas
