Day Eleven: Woke up to rain again and to Breakfast Ericka Falk style. Packed up and drove over to Bernd's house and he led us through Baden Baden to Heinrich Steib's house. Heinrich Steib is an eighty something year old man who wrote a book about his life and in it he wrote about the years when he was in a French prison camp with Karl's Opa. Karl's mother recently discovered the book and contacted him and he very much wanted to meet Karl. When we arrived and got out of the car Bernd was about to introduce him and he said "yah" and made a gesture to Karl's face and said Albert! He and his wife and family greeted us and had made lunch for us, Potato soup, breads, cheeses, chocolate - yummy. I did not understand a word they were saying but Karl was able to listen to all of Heinrich's stories and at times the sweet guy got emotional. Turns out he was only 15 years in that camp and he credits Albert Meister for saving his life during that time. After a lovely visit we drove out of Baden Baden and this time stayed on the Autobahn to Manheim. We arrived in the late afternoon and met up with Baldur and Gerlinde. We unpacked and went to the basement :-) They had dinner plans with a walking group they hang with and so we went with them to this old farm house for a Barbeque - German Style. The sausages, oh boy. We ate and relaxed and met some of Baldur & Gerlinde's friends and then went home for a long sleep.
