hey everyone, thought its about time we wrote on here and made some contact!
it's now friday afternoon/evening (i think!) and we've been here in bangkok for about 24hours now.
we had a pretty jammy flight over here - good food, good wine, good entertainment, great company! + a really short stop-over in doha (which by the way we now know is right next door to iraq!)
we somehow managed to negotiate our way out of the airport, on to a bus and eventually find ourselves a guesthouse. the room is alright for what we are paying - i think they took a minimalist approach to decorating but the sheets are clean and so far i've only seen one thing scuttle under the bed. we dumped our stuff and headed straight out for a couple of chilled chang (thailand's finest beer). the street we are on is like backpacker central and there are people doing exactly what we are all over the place.
we gave ourselves a lie in this morning before heading to the grand place. i looked full on tourist with my lonely planet and giant map! we saw the 'emerald budda' - disapointingly about the height of a ruler but surrounded by the most rediculous amount of regalia. it's all very sparkly and spangly - shine a light and it would be the worlds most amazing disco ball!
in terms of the city it's alot better than we were expecting - much cleaner and less smelly than i thought it would be - still hectic and busy with annoying tuk tuk men but overall not so bad. the weather is warm but wet - its light but definately raining and sadly i think it could continue that way for the rest of our trip - still, spirits are high and hair is fluffy!!
tomorrow we getting the overnight train to chiang mai so should arrive there sometime on sunday. looking forward to getting some fresher air and not feeling like i'm going to die anytime i'm within 5 feet of a road!
so basically so far so good - still a little timid of the food but we've promised ourselves we shall attempt something exciting tonight.
hope everyone is well and having fun in probably an equally wet england(?)
loads of love, fliss and zoe
mum - if i don't make any sort of contact before you go - have an amazing time in SA - take care and i'm sure you'll make it through the squallor!
