So today was my first full day in Alaska. I got up and dressed and once again wrestled my suitcase shut (but at least this time it was full of clean clothes) and then headed down to meet the others ready for our adventure to begin.
We met the 2 girls we hadn't met last night and then loaded the van and went for a short tour around Anchorage before then making our way to Homer.
Our first stop was the grocery store to buy snacks for the next couple of days - I don't need to be asked twice when it comes to snacks so I made my way around the store and bought a few yummy treats.
From here we drove to Beluga Bay to take a photo of the view. Unfortunately it was rainy and cloudy so the view was a little bit disguised! We then drove on further to the Bird Point Trailhead were we got further views out over the water. On our way we saw a fleeting sighting of a moose bug it doesn't really count as it was in a rehabilitation centre.
Our next stop was Tern Lake where we saw some terns and also a fish in the water. As we were driving along from the Kenai we saw all the fisherman lined up trying to catch salmon at the confluence of the river Kenai and the Russian river.
After this we made a quick stop at Safeway for a toilet stop. I wouldn't normally mention it but felt I needed to on this occasion as you actually walked through the store rooms past all the food to the restrooms passing some very subtle reminders that you were being filmed and that stealing is against the law.
So after our toilet stop we made our lunch stop at Clam Gulch were we saw 4 bald eagles sitting in the tree. After our lunch we headed down to the beach we're if it was a clear day we would have been able to see volcanoes but instead we saw some clouds! While here our guide informed us that the Alaskan women suggest that when t comes to Alaskan men 'the odds are good, but the goods are odd' which made me giggle. So anyway after looking at the view we made our way back up to the van and continued our journey towards Homer.
During the journey to Homer we saw a number of bald eagles flying and in trees and apparently they are known as the Homer Pigeon as there are so many in these parts. We also saw a number of sea birds and a sand hill crane. Still no moose though!
When we arrived in Homer we settled into our cabin which has a view of the Glacier we will be hiking to see tomorrow and we had a couple of hours chill time before meeting the group again for dinner. The cabin is really quite lovely with lots of space and it even has a s'mores welcome pack - my kind of place I think!
So I spent a couple of hours chilling and admiring the view from our cabin only to see a bald eagle flying towards us with its prey in its talons which was pretty amazing and as the evening progressed the sun began to come out opening up the view of the glacier in front of us.
For dinner we went to Homer spit and on the way we saw a group of sand hill cranes. For dinner we went to a local restaurant where I had some local Alaskan salmon and halibut and it was a scrummy. After dinner we walked along the front and spotted a Harbour seal right up by the beach bobbing in the water. We also got to explore Homer a little more and admire the view now the clouds had cleared up.
We took the extended journey home just in case we could spot a moose but unfortunately they were all in hiding but we did spot another bald eagle!
When we got back to the cabin we headed to bed ready for a day's hiking tomorrow! Let's see if my fitness levels are any better!
