After leaving the hostel near the Vatican I headed across town to the Sunshine Convent hostel, my home for the next 3 nights. This weekend happened to be the Feast of the Assumption, a national long weekend, which means that half of Rome was closed for the holidays. I checked into my private room and had a lazy afternoon. A small and quiet hotel, it is decorated with stuffed animals, fake flowers and doilies. My room is very purple and the hole place is a little like grandma's house on acid. (Complete with a Disney Princesses mat on the floor, the only thing missing is a toilet paper dolly!)
I woke up on Sunday with a sore throat and save a walk to the supermarket, I holed up in my room watching Murder she wrote dubbed in Italian and other TV gems (here it is called la Signora de Giallo, or Mrs Yellow for some unknown reason, with the hope of feeling better.
Today, not feeling any worse but with a lovely cough, I fully intended to exercise my democratic rights and vote, really only because I am staying within walking distance of the Australian Consulate, however upon arriving discovered that they were closed for the long weekend. This evening I watched the il Palio from Siena on the TV. A spectacular day long event it involves flag waving, men in armour and of course the horse race. After a series of false starts (involving jockeys and horses going at each other) the rce was won by the Turtle ward and the scenes of celebration were not unlike an AFL premiership-crying, hugging, butt slapping...
