We arrived at Harvey Bay with a slight problem, our car may need a new engine! The head gasket has gone and one of the belts has snapped. Fun house. Simon and Chris are both car fanatics and know all about cars so are checking the car out before buying the new engine. Mean while we booked our ticket to Fraser Island and embarked on one hell of an adventure of wild, rough livnig. No toilets, no showers, no facilities in general, just our truck, a few camping bits and bobs and us. With two groups, 6 in one pink 4x4 and 8 in the other we set off on the ferry to our destination. In our truck we have Chris, Simon, Jasmine from Canada and Jo and Mandy from England. In the other truck we have Alex and Jake who are a couple from England, Dave, Zac, John and Rob form America and Louise and Kerian from Ireland. Once we got there we set off through the forests to our first destination on our itinery. Lake Berillini or something like that. As we cam to the opening where the forest stopped and the lake started heaven surrounded us. Snow white sand, crystal clear water, sunshine and complete silence. It was so beautiful. Without hesitatino we all dived in and had a swim around. We visited 3 lakes in total and all of them were so beautiful in their own way. The second was green in colour to look at but still clear fresh water. One side was surrounded by forest and one side this huge sand dune. After a gruelling climb up this dune we tumbled down this hill into the cold fresh water, I've never seen anything so beautiful as this Island. We then walked for an hour through these dunes back to our car and cooked up some lunch. Tuna sandwiches and crisps...yum yum :D The afternoon consisted of visiting a creek which flowed into the sea with a high current. You could float down the creek from the top, through the forest. We saw the biggest spider I've ever seen, needless to say I speeded up my pace and got out of there quickly. We set up camp behind some sand dunes and both teams cooked up a feast. For us it was Hon Sin with beef, peppers and rice and the others, patties and sausages... (As you can tell my team had me in charge of the shopping list ;) ) After dinner it was pitch black (7pm) so we lit candles and in no time we were all very merry and telling jokes, playing games and even chinese whispers came out. Ended up getting to know each other alot better and having an awesome night. Dingos are like wolves and are everywhere on Fraser Island. We'd been warned that when girls wee we look like children, which Dingos often attack and so we should go in groups to pee. Many dingos approached us but no one got hurt and we all got close weeing together lol. The sun woke us up at 5. 30am, I looked like a mole when i managed to drag myself out of the tent. I wish I brought my sunglasses to hide behind. We had to be fed, watered and packed up by 7am to get down the beach before the tide came in, so after sandy weetabix we were off. Driving down the beach is so much better than in the forests. In the forests it's so bumpy and you feel like you've been on a roller coaster, which when hung over, is NOT good! The beaches however are flat and you can go 100km/hr racing down the 90km stretch of beach. Thats as long as you watch out for creeks....We missed one and gained about a metre of air before crashing down, thankfully on all four wheels, it was awesome lol. Our first destination was central station to get ice for our beer and beef, which involved driving up this hill of soft sand which we promptly became stuck in. It took about 40 mins and all the guys pushing to get the wheels free. The gals were being extremely helpful and documenting the whole thing on camera, it was so funny. However I could find better things to be doing at 7am in the morning. After recovering with a cup of coffee and collecting our ice we were off to the Indian head. The Indian head is a cliff face off the view point which looks like an Inidian head, although I couldnt see it personally. However we walked to the top of it and the view was incredible, you could see for miles down the beach and out to sea. After relaxing there for a bit we went back to the car and cooked up a massive BBQ of burgers, sausage and egg sandwiches and corn on the cobs. It took quite a while to get us all motivated to move after devouring that but we were soon off on the trek to the Champagne pools. These pools are little rock pools where the sea rolls into and makes the water fizz. It was so nice, however the rocks were quite sharp and waves knock you about a bit so you have to watch your toes. After a swim around it was time to head back to the truck and just as we got back the heavens opened! We set off trying to find a camping spot that would give us a little shelter from the rain and wind and managed to find a grassy spot behind the dunes with a few trees. We tied the big plastic sheets between the trucks and the trees and made a little roof and by the time we'd set up our tents and cooked out food the rain had stopped and we were all huddled around drinking and laughing again. I was pretty shattered as were most and ended up in bed at 9.30pm. You feel as though its 1 n the morning as you get up so early and it gets dark so early (6.30/7pm its pitch black) The next morning we went to Lake Makenzie and this time we had the whole morning there to soak up the place. It was absloutely stunning. The picture showing is from the same lake. The sand is bright white and the water is crystal clear and your surrounded by forests. Mandy and I decided to swim across the lake. It was alot futher than it looks and took us about an hour, but was so worth it. You could see all the way round the side where the lake extended and there was shallow sand that went out into the middle of the lake that you could walk on and get a proper view of the otherside of the water. The rest of the morning was spent building a massive sand castle and reading my book- Jeremy Clarkson- What a legend! At one point 3 dingos came scowering the beach and stole a guys flip flop lol, he didnt get it back and looked quite angry but not much he could do. By 1pm we were back in the car and off to the ferry, it was home time :( Felt like we needed another 2days to actually enjoy all we did but had a brilliant time and learnt that you should always carry sunglasses for early morning starts.
