This morning I set off for l'isle sur La Sorgue which is a beautiful township just 25 minutes from our home. Funnily enough everything seems to be about 25 minutes from here.
Sunday is market day here and not just any old market. This was the market of all markets including brocante, fruit and vegetables, clothing, leather goods, hand made soaps, saucisson, garlic, olives, rotisserie chickens, paella,... I was in market heaven!
I got there early, around 8.30am which was just as well as it soon got very busy with locals and tourists alike. The town is built following the Sorgue river and so the market runs along the river path as well. It makes for a lovely morning meandering through the lanes of stalls with views of the river and occasionally stopping on the many pedestrian bridges to take photos.
L'isle sur la Sorgue is renowned for its antique stores. Really if you were to buy a house in France this is the place you would come to furnish it. It is paradise for those who love antiques, oddities and nick knacks! Most of the antique shops hadn't opened when I got there so I just stuck to the market. Plus trying to get stuff back to NZ is just too hard.
The market was a great success I managed to buy two dresses, two tops and a pair of sandals all for under 100 euros. I quickly learnt by listening to the locals that bargaining the price is more than acceptable - love a bargain! After two hours I decided it was getting too busy so it was a quick stop for a rotisserie chicken and off home for lunch.
Now the wind has died down it has made the pool even more enticing so we enjoyed a couple of hours swimming and soaking up the sun before Jonathan, Brodie and I headed off to la Fountaine de Vaucluse for a bit of sightseeing. Jonathan and Jat actually discovered this village yesterday and insisted we visit it together. Similar to l'Isle sur la Sorgue, and just upstream from it, La Fountaine de Vaucluse is a beautiful village on a crystal clear river. It is actually at the source of the river to which we walked up to and then sat enjoying a cool drink and ice cream at a cafe by the side of the river. This village is also renowned as a resistance stronghold in WWII so visiting the museum was very interesting. We also stumbled upon a paper making factory, all done by hand and run using a water wheel!
Tomorrow we are off to La Camargue for a mix of beach, pink flamingo watching and horse riding!
