Sarah's European Adventure
Morocco was AMAZING!!! The country is absolutely gorgeous and the people I met were some of the nicest I've ever met. They were so anxious to speak to Americans, and even liked the same music and movies that I do (except that I heard Will Smith twice while I was there, I don't even think they're getting the best of the western influence there...).
I went to Tangier, Rabat, Chefchaquen, Ceuta, Asilah, and the Riff mountains. We had discussions with professors on Islamic misconceptions, shopped with Moroccan students, and even stayed with a Moroccan family for two nights. The best part was a spontaneous dance party that we had with a poor family up in the Riff mountains despite the fact that we couldn't speak the same language.
But they are amazing at languages. Most people I met knew at least 3, the rest knew Moroccan Arabic and French. I even got to use a little Spanish in Chefchaquen. For being a developing country, their grasp of languages far exceeds that of the United States as far as schooling and proficiency.
And yes I did get to ride a camel, even though they don't live in the northern part of Morocco where we were.
I loved my first taste of Africa and can't wait to go back, especially to Morocco, a country that I used to know nothing about but will forever be grateful to for opening my eyes to an entirely different world, and yet not all that different at the same time.
