This is it. My final entry. Im quite sad :(
I will of course be happy to be home, too! But this has been the most awesome trip ever, the most amazing journey, and I know I am incredibly blessed to have experienced what I have, and to have met so many beautiful people.
I stopped off in LA after Fiji, for one and half days. Stayed on Venice Beach, an artisitic/boho area, kind of like Camden but 10 times bigger! It's a bit mad and full of funny characters like people playing guitars skating on rollerblades... At first it was quite daunting arriving in such a big city after all the small, friendly communites I've been used to. LA is absolutely massive! I took a city tour and went through Beverley Hills, passing the homes of Steve Martin and Gene Kelly, Rodeo Drive where Julia Roberts shopped in the film 'Pretty Woman', and also up to Mann's Chinese Theatre, home of the footprints and handprints of the stars!! Didn't manage to spot any real stars, but I did get a glimpse of the Hollywood Sign in the hills! Wow. That was cool. I then did some window shopping in pretty Santa Monica where I got so lost finding my way back on the bus! This lovely elderly man, Elliot, who had to walk with a limp, stuck around for ages, asking bus drivers, and walking me past a block to get me to the right place! Very sweet.
New Yorkers are even more friendly: down to earth, generous and charismatic. Always up for a chat! Well thats what I've found. I've had at least one person a day that I've had a good chat with on the subway/ferry/bus, give me their number to hang out with later! Well, some were tourists actually, but they were American too!
I LOVE NEW YORK! The architecture is gorgeous - so many different building styles in all these different, earthy colours. The Manhatten Skyline from Brooklyn is just stunning. Then there's all the history too, and the culture. Anyone who's ever made it has acted here, played music here; many also made their break in various different venues in the city. Its so exciting. My first time downtown when I got out the subway, I exited in Times Square and my heart just went crazy! All the lights, all the people, all the buzz. There's never enough time - the only time I'm in my hostel is when I get out of bed and climb in again, late and exhausted at night, but just waiting to get out to the city again! Of course I've done all the big tourist stuff - Statue of Liberty, Empire State building at sunset, Central Park, Guggenheim and the Metropolitan Museums. The Met is huge - I think its two and a half miles long or something! And incredible - you can wonder around in an Ancient Greek veranda with beautiful statues and then a corridor down, you're inside a beautifully ornate nineteenth century Italian court home. Where the ceilings are like over 20 feet high or something!
I don't have enough to explore everything of course, but I've been taking this hop on/hop off bus, giving commentary along the way and passing through Harlem, Upper West and East sides, all the way downtown, through Little Italy, the Village, Chinatown - all that and through to Brooklyn too, so at least I've caught a little bit of everything. Now I'm gonna get my last shopping fix before I'm home! I went to look in Barneys this morning though - there was a sale on, and the reduced price was like $500! Hmm maybe not!
Anyway, I can definitly recommend New York to anyone! So if you ever can manage to, then come here!!!
Feel like I'm signing out now...Well, thanks for reading this! It's hometime for me now...
See you next time :)
