Hamilton - The Last FrontierWell I'm writing this from the comfort of my own lounge. The heater's on and it's wet and windy outside. I've seen as much rain since we got home as we had during the whole holiday. That's why we tried to escape our winter. However, Spring's on the way.Our last few days in Thailand was so pleasant and relaxing. O…
Joe Doyle Pat and Bea Kearney lived there. No children. Bea was the last living person in Shranalee. She was great to visit even in her late years. She died at the age of 103. She walked 5 miles a day all her life come rain or snow. The Village is now deserted but has a wonderful history.
re: The "new" house - ShranaleeJoe Doyle My Grandfather John Dunne from Shranalee is buried there His wife and my uncle moved out of Shranalee in April 1953 and relocated to County Meath where the government gave him a new house and land. Many of his neighbors also moved out to Meath and of course kept in touch with one another and helped one another out with farming issues.
re: Grandies graveJoe Doyle This is the house of John and Dunesmanie Kearney. Their son Pat married a nurse named Bea. She was the last resident of Shranalee and died a few years ago in a home in Culte Mait, She was 103 years old.The house they lived in was one you identified as "The New House" It's empty and the village is deserted. This house was the neatest house in Shranalee and Mrs Kearney planted beautiful flowers all around the house, much to the envy of her neighbors. It's still beautiful.
re: The very old houseJoe Doyle As a young boy in the early 1950's I fished that lake many times. Never caught a single fish although I would see them jumping in the lake in the evenings. My grandmother and Uncle Mike Dunne lived in Shranalee. This picture was taken from a hilltop locally called the "Crigawn" My mother came from there. Beyond the lake are two fields that I would roll down just for fun. Life was simple in those days. Thanks for the photo. .
re: Lake at ShranaleePatricia Vigliano My grandparents Aunt and Uncle are also buried at Turlough cemetery in an unmarked grave. I was shown the spot where the grave is. My grandmother was widowed with 5 girls when my my mother was only 3 years old. Did you live in the district? My cousin still lives in the family home at Killard. I am ashamed to say. we emigrated to Australia in 1958.
