Tales from Afar...
Hola Amigas!
Landed safely in San Jose on monday after a fairly scary stopover in Caracas on sunday night. Chrissy was there to meet me with a beaming smile, and the last leg of my adventure began! i had totally run out of dollars and didn't have a clue what currency they used in Costa Rica, so before finding our transfer to the hostel i decided to use the ATM. it was all going swimmingly until i was presented with the page where i had to chose what amount of Colones i wanted. I didn't have a CLUE what a colone was worth so i banked on 4000 being plenty given that it had been the biggest number on the screen...well, it totally wasn't. we got to the hostel and went to pay. i asked her for the amount in Colones and she literally laughed in my face when i told her i only had 4000. i had basicallyu just taken the equivalent of 4quid out of a cashpoint. which was probably less than the amount i was gonna get charged for using the damn ATM in the first place! Doh!
After a rather unexpectedly early start (my alarm was still set in the brasilian time zone, so we got up 2 hours early!oops!) we hopped on the bus to Tamarindo, a "surfers paradise" on the Northwestern coast of the country. The bus journey was long and sticky. nothing like the luxury of the buses that were standard in Brasil. but we eventually found Tamarindo through the torrential rain and after a bit of trek around town we found a nice place to stay just for the evening...a bit of luxury for my birthday and all! Then we grabbed some dinner and hit the town. To be honest, the rest of the evening is a rather charming haze of dancing without my flipflops on drinking dodgy Costa Rican rum and meeting some "interesting" guys. Met two Deputy Sherriffs from the Mid West who were MASSIVE and yet couldnt hold their drink which was quite funny.
We both suffered dearly for our overindulgences the following day, but fortunately for us it was a lovely day so after moving to some more modest accomodation, we found sun-loungers on the beach and crashed out for the day to the lullaby of the ocean. Chrissy and i are both officially "never drinking again"...well, until next time that is!
We got up early this morning intent on doing something productive with our day, however, it was only after a good few hours of aimless wandering around town that we settled on doing a Canopy tour. It was AWESOME! We were driven up into the rainforest and kitted out with harnesses and helmets etc. we looked Fantastic, especially as the guides insisted on securing the harnesses so tightly that rolls of fat were produced in places i didnt know they existed. Still, it was worth it. We did 8 Zip Lines of different heights, speeds and lengths, flying through the canopy of the forest along a series of platforms. It was great fun, i even went down one of the lines upside down! i wish i had remembered my camera!
So the rain has set in again for the day and we have been chased in doors. which is probably a good thing as we haven't yet made any solid plans for what we want to do for the next 7days before we fly to Guatamala.
Will keep you posted.
All my Love and belated birthday-girl hugs,
F Xx
