Koh Tao is a small island, meaning Turtle Island, it is the perfect place to come diving, it is most popular for this as it is the second best place in the world for diving. We came here for 3 days to just chill out before heading back to Koh Phangan for the Full Moon Party. We stayed in a place called Sairee beach and our hostel was quite literally on the beach. The island is very tranquil in contrast to Phanang. Everything was so close together, bars, shops, restaurant, the beach and our accomadation were all within a 5 minute walk. On our first night there was 12 of us and we went to lady boy cabaret, it was free to watch but the drinks were expensive and it was just lady boys dancing and miming to songs like Lady Gaga and Madona. At the end they went and grabbed a few men from their seats, taking them backstage, after a few short minutes they all came out wearing bikinis and wings dancing around with the lady boys, so it ended quite funny. The next few days were just spent on the beach and at night we would go to the bars on the beach where we could just relax on cushions on the sand and listen to the music and watch guys doing tricks with fire.
Thursday 16th June, we decided to catch the early ferry across, thinking it might be a little quiter than the later one but it was still very packed. Koh Phangan was now covered in tourists and market stalls had popped up selling Full Moon Party merchandise. The 4 of us girls went out to buy outfits for the evening getting I heart Koh Phangan tops and beads to wear. On the night the streets were packed and stalls selling buckets of alcohol. The Party was just like what you see on the documentries and programmes on television. It was an experience I'm glad I did and it was a top night even though I didn't get drunk.
On Saturday we had a 9 hour journey ahead of us to Phuket, We got a ferry from Koh Phangan to mainland Thailand, Don Sak and then had to get a coach to Surat Thani. When we arrived in Surat Thani a tuk tuk drove us to a cafe where all other backpackers were getting taken to too so we assumed we'd get picked up from here but instead it was just a catch for us to spend money buying food, we waited in this place for about an hour not needing too. Another tuk tuk then came and got us and took us to the coach we was suposed to get at 5pm but it was now after 7pm. 6 or 7 of us got on this coach and there was about 3 empty seats, I managed to get one (next to a Sunderland fan and there was me in my Villa top, all good banter though). We eventually arrived in Phuket after 12 hours of travelling. We got to our hotel and it was actual luxury to everywhere else we have stayed for just £8 a night. We decided to head out and check out Patong. We went into a place called Rock City, a lively bar with a band playing. This band was very good performing songs by Guns 'n' Roses, Linkin Park and Metalica so I liked it very much.
After 2 nights in Phuket we got the ferry to Koh Phi Phi, this is where parts of the film The Beach was set. It is an amazing little island and has no roads so there are no cars or scooters just people on bicycles ringing their bells at you to jump out the way. Lots of market stalls and travel agents line the path ways which is very cute. Last night we went to a place called Reggae Bar which has a boxing ring in the middle of this bar. We watched some Thai Boxing which was horrible to watch at first but became quite entertaining some how. The bar offered a free bucket of alcohol to anyone in the bar who volenteered to go in the ring and thai box with someone. There was quite a few volenteers and it was quite fun to watch english men try it out. We have another few days here before we head to Krabi which is back on mainland Thailand.
