FIJI!! 5th Jan
We arrived at 5 in the morning and had our first taste of Fiji as soon as we got off the plane - men in skirts singing us a welcome song and playing guitars! Waited an eternity for our luggage and then had to wait for a bus to take us to the port so we could catch our boat. We got a lot of funny looks sitting at the bus stop from all the local people driving past - probably thinking not more tourists!
Arrived at the marina where we got on the ferry to take us to the first island stop of our package - one of the Yasawa group of islands which was up in the north. Sat up on the deck and got a bit blown away and then it started to rain! o dear - this wasnt going to help start our tans! We didnt realise quite how long the boat ride was going to be - it took nearly five hours to get to where we were going! and the boat was swaying nicely in the rain! Eventually made it but got soaked as we had to get on a smaller boat to take us to the shore and the rain wasnt stopping! Had a lovely welcome though - sat down to be served lunch straight away and sung to again by the people that ran the resort! Then we were shown to our accomodation - were a bit shocked to find that we were sleeping in a hut on the waters edge! the facilities were all pretty basic - outside toilets and showers (which were freezing!) - all fun in the rain! spent the afternoon sheltering inside! in the evening had dinner (which, like all the meals, was announced by ringing a bell like being at school!) and spent some time getting to know the others that were staying on the island with us - bonding over card games!
6th Jan
Got woken up really early by the sea outside and to find we had been eaten by mosquitos in the night! It wasn't raining today...yet! In the morning we walked around the island to the other side and a place called the blue lagoon (used in a film apparently!) where we swam in the lovely warm bright blue sea! There were a group us there and we got taken by the guys a different way back - over the top of the island. It was really hot by now and this way was all up and down hill and really muddy! The views were lovely but we got really dirty feet! As soon as we got back we had to go for another swim to cool off! In the afternoon we sat on the beach and walked up to a tea house where we had tea and cake! then it rained! and rained! really hard! spent the afternoon inside and then in the evening we had a fijian 'kava' ceremony where we had to drink cups of what tasted like mud! mmm... was an interesting insight into fijian culture though! ended the evening with a sing song and hoped it would be less rainy tomorrow as we were going to be on a boat for the next two days!
