I'm in Guatemala! A little spontaneous but so many travellers have ranted about how amazing it is I felt compelled to see for myself. I flew with a friend from Mexico City to Guatemala City yesterday and have had ample time to explore the city since. There is an abundance of beautiful churches and cathedrals and a fantastic market where I bought a suitably Guatemalan poncho. I'm happy with my purchase, especially as the lady at the hostel who speaks only spanish told me it's my colour! We also saw a ridiculous amount of pigeons stuffed in a cage, for what purpose I'm still unsure.
Guatemalan cuisine is a slight variation from Mexican, serving tacos etc but from what I've seen so far these are thicker and less oily than Mexican tacos. We've eaten at an incredibly cheap restauraunt (about £2 for a great giant chicken, rice and vegetable dish and a beer) and also at the market where I felt I had to try the stomach and cow belly tacos. Although glad I tried them, probably not a dish I'm coming back to. In search of typical Guatemalan coffee we also stopped by at Saul, a cafe recommended by the hostel. The coffee was decent but the whole place and atmosphere was more European chic rather than the Guatemalan strong black coffee shack I had sought after. Still, a little research and I've found a promising coffee mecca in our next stop, Antigua, which also has an apparently must see chocolate cacao museum and some pretty cool historical ruins. Stay tuned.
