Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia (how many people who read this are going to ask someone if they knew that, in a condescending manner - I know I would!).
To be honest, our time in Phom Penh itself was short lived and I feel that I should actually describe the journey from Saigon to Phom Penh, which, in many ways, was more eventful! The roads in Vietnam aren't bad... the roads in Cambodia are non-existent. this made for a bit of a jolty ride. Apart from the roads, the differences between Vietnam and Cambodia were immediately recognisable - the people for one look very different, seeming to have more of an Indian than a Chinese heritage. Secondly, poverty was alot worse - more begging and more street vendors.
The funniest......actually scratch that...the most memorable part of the journey was when we came to the roadworks (what roads they were working on I still have no idea). There must have been half a dozen diggers and pick up trucks diverting us off the track we were travelling on. Unfortunately, our driver obviously misunderstood "stop" for "go" which caused the same situation as it would have in England - chaos and a bit of road rage by which I mean that the driver of one of the diggers got out and came towards our bus with what looked like a bat in his hand - I found it difficult to see exactly what it was because it kept coming in and out of sight as he repeatedly beat our driver....only kidding! But there was a bat and alot of shouting accompanied by the meanest stares I have ever been victim to by all of the workers, and all the vehicles that we had held up! - Welcome to Cambodia.
