Thursday 21st April
Tonight we are on the night bus to Hanoi. The bus has bunk like beds.Hen and I have booked a double upper bed.The bed has a massager on it, fabby!Henry isn't feeling so good so not the best time to take a 12 hour bus journey. It leaves Sapa at 6pm and gets into Hanoi around 7ish.It feels like the longest journey ever as I've only had 1 hours sleep. The bus drops you off 8km out of town - GREAT! We jump in a taxi to the old quarter. We stay at then City Gate Hotel, it's okay, pretty basic and very small but we are too tired to look for anything else.
Friday 22nd April
Today we decide to explore the city. There are thousands of mopeds on the streets of Hanoi. The pollution is terrible. Most local people wear a mask to cover their nose and mouth. On every street we see something different. There are different streets selling different things. A street selling shoes, crafts, hats, toys and many more. We go to the local market and see lots of cool and horrible things! There is a lady hitting frogs on the head to stun them, this is so they are alive and fresh but can't hop away. Next to this we see a women de-scaling a fish with a knife and it is still alive. You have to see it for yourself to believe some of it.
Saturday 23rd April
Today we are meeting up with Si who we met in Vang Vieng. We have coffee in one of the restaurants about 7-8 storeys up.It overlooks the city and the lake. It's a lovely view but very over priced. We head to the Vietnam Military History Museum. It's about a 20-30 minute walk away.It is 20,000 vnd to get in.It is very interesting.I love seeing all the old photographs. There is a movie showing so we sit to watch it.It explains and shows how the Vietnamese defeated the French at Din Bien Phu in 1954 after a 57 day siege.Outside there were planes, helicopters, tanks etc.It was all very interesting. We decide it's time for a beer.We stop at a popular Bia Hoi stall. There are many people sitting on small childlike plastic stools on the pavement. They serve you fresh cold beer straight from the keg. It's delicious and it's only 5,000 vnd a glass. They also sell poppadom like things. They are very tasty. We are all going to Cat Ba Island tomorrow.Very excited as we have to go through Halong Bay to get there.
