Fern and Mike on Tour
Hello! This is our final evening in Cairns an what a time we have had! Picking up were we left off....
The hostel was actually ok, we had reservations as pretty much immediately as we walked in some guy was streaking. We spend our first day being shattered after no sleep but sorting out our trip down the coast. We sorted it with BWT, most expensive day ever but everything is sorted for trips, hostels, busses an even quite a few of our meals! We had a pretty early night that night.
We went to to harbour to admire all the beautiful boats the next day. They were amazing!! Huge big yacht things which sleep like 10/14 people an have extra boats on board to take people to shore. It was a joke, we got awful jealous an now want a boat to go with everything else we want! We then went an chilled by the lagoon. The sun here is really hot!! I know that sounds soft but serious! We sat by the lagoon for an hour an we are burnt! What's with that!
We picked up the plans for our trip in the afternoon to finalise everything. Seems like so much in 4 weeks but will be brilliant!
On the Wednesday we headed out to the Great Barrier Reef to go snorkelling! OMG it was amazing. The weather was beautiful, the water clear an the boat brilliant! We left the harbour round 8:30am on a big boat called deep sea divers den. There was about 40 of us on board, the majority doing diving though. The reef is pretty far out, about 1hr30 to 2hrs away from Cairns. We were given our wetsuits, snorkel, mask an flippers to get into when we reached the sites.
We stopped at two sites to snorkel, each for about 90mins. Both sites were brilliant and the water wasn't cold either which was a bonus. We got to see so many different types of fish! The coral at one site was brilliant, still in perfect shape. Nemo paid us a visit out of his little house so I was made up!! There was this huge fish they called Wally (not sure why) but if you shake your hand at him he swims to you an you can tickle his chin!!
The best part of the snorkelling came half way through the second site. We saw SHARKS!!! They were only reef sharks but omg!! They were huge! About 2m long. They defo look like great white but smaller, I'm no shark expert so I took the word of everyone else when they said they won't eat me! I slept most of the way back to the harbour obviously.
That night we went out for a few drinks. $8 was making sure we couldn't vet drunk! We went for some food at Pj Obriens then to a party over at BWT then to the woolshead. They did goldfish racing which was the weirdest thing in the world.
The next two days were spent chillin down the lagoon an preparing for the busiest month of our travelling lives! We did manage to find cheap beer which was a bonus! $9 a jug so not too bad!
We are off to Townsville tomorrow to get over to Magnetic Island! I'll update when we get to Airlie beach.
Love you all xxxxx
