The drive over the coast range to Manchester took us through some wonderful scenic areas. Clear Lake was the highlight on the way to highway 101/Ukiah and the highway through the mountains to Boonville provided us with breath taking views of high mountain ridges and forested valleys.
The most direct route to the coast from Boonville is a called Mountain View rd. Now, I like to drive. Even drive challenging mountain roads, yet Mountain View made me pine for the linear boredom of I-5. This stretch of sinister sinuousity is at best a single lane road with a line down the middle just for show. At worst it is a paved horse trail with a shear drop off for a shoulder. The setting afternoon sun blinded me as I climbed through hairpin turns in second gear only to be rewarded with harrowing 16% downgrades through an unholy chain of interlocked ampersands that make your local amusement park rollercoaster look like your kids' Thomas the Train set. I alternated between nervous giddy laughter and white knuckled cursing under my breath as it took us over an hour to travel 27 miles. Keegan slept through the whole ride and Sibyl acted as spotter when the suns rays were lancing my corneas white blind. Finnegan gave me encouragment from the back seat while keeping an eye on the edge of the road. You can see the sign for the cemetary in the back ground of the picture above. Coincidence? I think not.
