Friday's fun-filled frolics!!
Okey dokey, what did we do next? We returned from Fraser Island and made our way to a tiny town called 1770 (yes, I know it's a bit of a strange name). On our return from Fraser Island we were joined by Sian's boyfriend Jon so we started travelling up the coast as a four. We then met a couple of mates in 1770 who had been in our group on Fraser, Zoe and Rich, and the six of us have been travelling up to Cairns together.
1770 was a pleasant little town with some nice coastal views. Poor Davide however managed to get himself a fine of 225 dollars for not wearing a seatbelt. We didn't stay long after that and the 6 of us drove to Airlie Beach where we were to begin our 3 day sailing tour of the Whitsunday islands. The group was cool, although we did have some pretty loud Irish and Canadian guys who started drinking as soon as we got on the boat (so that's like 8am!) Goon shots (cheap wine) were going round by 10am. The snorkelling in the reef was amazing, the coral and fish were stunning. The weather wasn't great for sailing so we mainly used the motor, but I managed to get Fabien (our french driver of the boat - whatever that's called! Skipper?) to let me take the wheel for a while. Another highlight of the trip was Whitehaven beach - fine white sand and gorgeous blue waters. Some say it's meant to be the best beach in Oz. Fantastique!
We returned to Airlie beach for a night on the town before continuing our journey north. Next stop: Magnetic Island off the coast of Townsville. The 6 of us stayed here for 3 nights where we went sea kayaking, lazed on the beach reading, watched the opening ceremony to the World Cup at midnight, took part in a footy tournament (the boys did anyway) and generally tried to detox after the heavy nights on the Whitsundays tour.
We left Magnetic Island yesterday and arrived in Cairns in the afternoon. Cairns so far looks like a great city; lots of restaurants, bars and coffee shops. It's right by the Great Barrier Reef too so Dave and I plan to take a trip to the outer reef tomorrow to do some snorkelling. Should be awesome!
We leave Australia in 2 days for Singapore. We've had a great time in Oz but I'm really looking forward to not speaking english all the time and experiencing a different type of culture in Asia!
Cool, until next time....
