Friday's fun-filled frolics!!
Hello from Christchurch!! Our last stop in New Zealand
:-( Sorry it has taken a while for an NZ installment but the internet is too expensive over here and also we've been doing too many cool things to worry about the blogs!
We flew into Auckland about a month ago where we celebrated Dave's 23rd birthday in the popular student area of the city, Parnell. After 3 months in S. America it was weird to be in a place where everyone speaks English, where the cars are coming from the 'wrong' side of the road and where 2 pounds couldn't buy you a nice meal out anymore! But first impressions of Auckland were pretty cool - everything you hear about NZ is true; the people are super friendly and everything is just so pretty! It was also difficult to not get caught up in the lingo - everything is 'sweet as' and there's an 'ay' at the end of every sentence. I also got my tongue pierced while in Auckland - felt very weird at first, as you can imagine, but am used to it now. Couldn't eat or talk properly for a few days but I've been making up for that since!
We decided to rent a campervan to take us around the two islands as we'd heard it was the best way to see the country. Firstly we made our way right to the north of the country, to the remote but gorgeous Cape Reinga before heading back down past Whangerei (where my big sis went to boarding school many (many) years ago - just kidding Tuni, you're not that old yet) after which we headed to Rotorua to sample some Maori culture and thermal healing! Check out the pics of the thermal pools and our evening of Maori entertainment in which we played a part! A bit embarrassing but quite funny I guess......
Next destination was Taupo to do a skydive! Absolutely incredible feeling! As soon as we touched ground we just wanted to go back and do it again and again! Our freefall lasted about 45 seconds and the adrenaline rush you get from that makes it the best part! Sweet as!
The scenery in the North Island was really beautiful - lots of hills, wide open spaces and gorgeous beaches. Living in the van was pretty comfortable too! The male brain is graffitied on one side of the van with such things like 'avoiding personal questions gland'....the female brain is on the other side; 'driving skills' is apparently non-existant. Controversial seeing as I have definitely been the better driver on this trip!
Ok, south island installment coming soon!
Lots of love xxxx
PS. Happy 1st birthday Aaliyah!
