So...Colombia. Difficult to say. Certainly not my favourite SA country. It was an interesting place but I wouldn't rave about it. I am though definitely in the minority and it wasn't helped by starting my journey with a total nut job as a travelling companion. Love those Americans and their neurosisisisis, sorry to all my dear American friends out there but this girl was really special! Despite my dear friend Robi trying to run a PR campaign on the merits of Colombia I'm still not convinced - sorry Robi I did try.
It wasn't all bad just not a thrill a minute kind of place. There were a few highlights - honestly - and I still managed to take a few hundred pictures but still not quite sure how I managed that as it just didn't do it for me.
Loved Bogota and the Botero museum. Very intrigued though as to how the Broadgate complex in London managed to get the Venus in situ all the way from Colombia. One of life's mysteries I guess. Chilled in both Villa de Leyva and Popyan, two Colonial 'showcases' but not a lot to show for it apart from lots of time spent drinking coffee and reading. Enjoyed the trip across country to San Augustin to see the hundreds of monumental stone statues especially as I got to go horse back riding on a crazy horse. You have though been spared having to look at all the pictures I took as I have managed to lose them along the way.
Cali saw a trip to a plastic surgery clinic - not for me I might add. Well lets face it, its hard to improve on perfection! Nothing like false modesty heh! Only joking of course. Met a girl who was having laser eye surgery and she needed someone to go with her. It was serious fun sitting in the waiting room people watching trying to work out what they had had done. Boobs and bums seem to be fairly high on the list for your average Cali girl.
Had a week in the coffee region. It was a beautiful spot, lovely countryside, great coffee and an excellent two day tramp up the Corcorca Valley and of course the night spent chucking lumps of metal into sandpits filled with explosives while downing a few beers. Only in Colombia could you do this surely?
Had an all too brief visit to Medellin which was a lot of fun and a really interesting city especially the Botero statues. Less fun was the mad dash to catch my flight to the coast when I ended up at the wrong airport. Just my luck I not only picked up the most clapped out taxi I could find which the driver kept stalling and having to reverse downhill to get more power but there was a torrential downpour. Just made it on time though, phew! Last up was Cartagena, the beautiful beach Playa Blanca on Baru Island and a few days chilling in Taganga.
All in all not a bad trip but it just didn't do it for me. It was certainly not as much fun as the last few months in Cuenca have been. A new apartment; my third lot of parasites - love those critters who also seem to love me just as much; Castillo and Vaca Loca to celebrate Corpus Christi; some fun nights out dancing but still struggling with my basic Salsa steps and two new levels to teach. All in all a good time!
